Health authorities have reported another suspected case of Marburg virus disease at Songwe border in Karonga. The individual’s samples have been sent to South Africa for testing to verify whether or not the symptoms he is showing reference the virus. Last week, the officials isolated five people who showed similar symptoms, although tests revealed that they were negative.

An internal memo signed by the hospital’s director said two patients were being treated for Typhoid fever and the other three were being treated for adult measles. A team from the Public Health Institute of Malawi is on site to investigate the cases.

Marburg virus disease can cause serious hemorrhagic fever, and it affects both people and non-human primates. However, officials suggest that people do not need to panic about the situation.
