Chikhwawa has registered 56 cases of cholera, a problem a senior district health official has blamed on water shortages that hit the district some two weeks ago.
A visit to Chikhwawa District Hospital on Tuesday revealed that hospital officials have since erected a special shelter designated for cholera cases, and some patients were seen receiving drips of water.
Chikhwawa District Health Officer, Fatsani Ngwalangwa-Kasinja, confirmed the development on Tuesday, saying, as of Friday last week, 56 cases were registered.
“However, the cholera cases have nothing to do with the onset of the rains. The problem has come in after water shortages hit the district for four consecutive days some two weeks ago, forcing people to drink from unsafe water sources. In fact, we only started experiencing cholera problems after the water shortages,” said Ngwalangwa-Kasinja.
