Two die, 22 hospitalised as cholera outbreak rages in Karonga

Two people have died and 22 others hospitalised following cholera outbreak in the northern border district of Karonga, officials have confirmed.

According to the district environmental health officer Luis Tukula, the two died while receiving treatment.

Tukula said the most affected area as of now is Ngala fishing area which is in the southern part of the district.

?The disease is spreading so fast,? said Tukula.

He noted that the patients had developed severe diarrhoea and vomiting...

Cholera outbreak continues in Karonga; cases rise to 51

Karonga District Council and other stakeholders working in health sector are in dilemma over the fast spreading of a cholera outbreak in the district. Two people have reportedly died with a total of 51 registered cases in four weeks.

The district council and the stakeholders met on Monday to discuss how they could contain the outbreak of the disease.

A report presented at the meeting by Karonga District Environmental Health Officer, Lewis Tukula indicated that about 23 villages have been affected in all the five traditional authorities.

?So far, we have registered two deaths and 51 cases within four weeks and most affected are females,? said Tukula...

Minister of Health and Population Atupele Muluzi has said although the cholera situation is certainly worsening, it has not yet reached the stage where it can be regarded as an epidemic.

The Minister said this when he gave an update on the situation of cholera in the country on Thursday morning at the Ministry of Health at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, where he appealed for assistance from everyone to compliment his ministry?s efforts in trying to contain the disease...

...As of January 4, a total of 158 cholera cases have been reported in the country which has resulted in four deaths with Karonga registering the highest number of them at 138 including all the 4 fatalities.

Nkhatabay has reported 16 cases, Dowa two and both Lilongwe and Kasungu have had a case each and out of all these cases, 146 have been treated and are now well at home, with only seven patients in the treatment camps...

Cholera outbreak hits Salima district

Salima District Council has confirmed Cholera outbreak in the district after two samples which were referred to Community Health Support Unit (CHSU) laboratory tested positive.

According to the focal person for Integrated Disease Surveillance Response (IDSR), Luciano Abraham, the test results from the samples were released on Sunday.

?Results from two samples that were collected from two patients have tested positive to cholera and therefore the district is declared in cholera outbreak,? said Abraham.

He said the two patients are from one family and come from Kaphatenga Village in the area of Senior Chief Kalonga.

Apart from the two confirmed cases, there are also three other cholera suspected cases waiting for test results...

Two cholera cases have been confirmed at Thonje Health Centre in Dowa district.
This happened a day after another cholera case from the district was reported at Salima District Hospital on 7th January, 2018.

Confirming the development, Dowa District Hospital?s Public Relations Officer ( PRO) Davie Nuka said one patient has since been discharged while the other one is still being kept in the camp at the hospital for monitoring.

Thonje is the village where the other cholera patient reported at Salima District Hospital was coming from before he was admitted at Mvera Mission Health Centre in the district...

Malawi Cholera Death Toll Rises

The death toll from a cholera outbreak in the country has risen as Ministry of Health has confirmed.

This follows the death of one more person on Tuesday, while 11 new cases have been recorded in the capital city and that there 15 people in the cholera treatment quarantine.

Cumulatively, the number of those who have died to cholera in the capital is now five since November 2017...

Malawi: Three New Cholera Cases Reported in Salima

Salima ? After three weeks without registering a cholera case, over the weekend, three new cases have been reported in two health facilities, it has been revealed.

Speaking to MANA on Wednesday, District Environmental Health Officer (DEHO), Lucius Donsa said that two patients were admitted to Khombedza Health Centre while one is admitted to Salima District Hospital.

"It's true, we have three new cases of Cholera in the district, the cases are admitted in cholera camps at Khombedza Health Centre and Salima District Hospital Cholera isolation camps," said Donsa...

The country is still registering a high number of cholera cases as 14 new cases were recorded on Friday.

According to Ministry of Health and Population Spokesperson Joshua Malango, the cases were reported in Lilongwe, Rumphi and Karonga.

Cholera cases still rising

Cholera cases are still increasing in the country despite efforts of government and international organisations to fight the waterborne disease.

According to Ministry of Health and Population spokesperson Joshua Malango, the number of recorded cases since the outbreak started has now reached 442.

This comes after the ministry recorded new cases on Saturday, 10 January.

Cholera deaths continue to rise in the country despite efforts by Malawi government and the international community.

According to Malawi Ministry of Health Spokesperson Joshua Malango, cholera deaths in Malawi have now reached 9 since the deadly disease has killed one person in Malawi?s capital, Lilongwe.

He added that on Sunday 11 new cholera cases were reported from 4 districts.
Two of the reported cases are in Lilongwe, six in Salima, one in Likoma and two in Karonga,?

Cholera has killed two more people in Malawi?s capital, Lilongwe.

Ministry of Health and Population has confirmed the death of the two people which takes the total number of people who have been killed by cholera to 12.

According to Ministry of Health spokesperson Joshua Malango, 10 new cholera cases have also been recorded in 3 districts across the country and some patients are still admitted in hospitals.

The country has registered 653 cases of cholera during the current rainy season, Ministry of Health and Population says.

According to Ministry of Health and Population spokesperson Joshua Malango, over the past few days the country has registered 13 new cholera cases taking the number of cases since the outbreak started to 653.

According to Malango, 24 cholera patients are in treatment camps.

The Ministry of Health and Population has said the number of people who have died from cholera during the current rainy season has reached 13.

According to Ministry of Health Spokesperson Joshua Malango, 14 new cholera cases have been recorded over the past two days taking the number of cases since the start of the outbreak to 679.

Cholera Deaths Increase in Malawi

Lilongue, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) At least 718 people are contaminated and 19 died as a result of an outbreak of cholera that affects inhabitants of 13 of the 28 districts of Malawi, health authorities reported today.

The cases increased from 546 in January to the current 718, indicates a note from the Ministry of Health.
