Malaria claims 4 kids in Dhenkanal

DHENKANAL: Malaria has broken out in predominantly tribal Sorisapada gram panchayat (GP) of Gondia block in Dhenkanal district. Sources said the disease has claimed four kids in the past one week though official sources confirmed only one death.
The victims are Sanju Gagarai (1), Bada Soren (2), Raimani Tiu (1) and Chadan Dehury (11 months) of Kola and Bania villages in Sorisapada GP. Many more are affected by the disease. Tribal leaders alleged that health care facilities are woefully inadequate and no special allocation for tribal health care has been made under NRHM in the district.
Tribal people are forced to walk down 25 km to see a doctor in Sriramchandrapur CHC. In the absence of medical facilities, the tribals, mostly daily-wagers and forest-dwellers, are depending on quacks which is aggravating the situation. It was further alleged that there is no coordination among health workers, anganwadi
workers and ASHA volunteers to curb malaria.
After visiting the GP, Dr N C Raj, ADMO (Public Health), admitted that Sanju died of malaria while the reason for the death of three others was yet to be ascertained. Immunity condition of the children needs to be reviewed, he said. He admitted that health care facilities are lacking in the GP and another PHC should be opened in the block. Blood samples from the affected persons have been collected for testing. The ADMO said steps are being taken to check further spread of the disease under anti-malaria programme.
Sriramchandrapur CHC medical officer G C Sahoo did not take the call.
