The number of people killed by a powerful earthquake on Indonesia's main island of Java has risen to 32.

Thousands were forced to evacuate as more than 700 houses and buildings were smashed in the 7.0 magnitude tremor.

Scores of people have been injured, a disaster official confirmed.
Many of the victims perished after a landslide triggered by the tremor buried their homes.

The quake shook buildings in capital city Jakarta and levelled homes in villages closer to the epicentre in West Java shortly before 8am GMT.

"Many houses are flattened to the ground," said Edi Sapuan in Margamukti village, not far from Tasikmalaya.

"Only the wooden houses remain standing. Many villagers are injured, covered in blood. We ran as soon as the quake hit. Then, five minutes later, my house collapsed."

The quake was felt as far away as Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city, 500km (300 miles) north east of Tasikmalaya, and on the resort island of Bali, 700km to the east.

Hundreds of people sheltered in a military base in Tasikmalaya, fearing the initial quake would be followed by aftershocks, a disaster agency official said.
Tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas within several hundred kilometres of the epicentre, but were withdrawn about 30 minutes later.

People in Jakarta reported buildings shaking, and thousands of people streamed onto the streets of the capital from office and apartment blocks.

"Everything was shaking and my neighbour shouted 'quake, quake'," said Nur Syara, who lives on the 31st floor of a building.

"You could hear the walls creaking. I lay down on the floor. I was scared things would collapse."

Death Toll in Indonesian Quake Reaches 46

By PETER GELLING

Published: September 3, 2009

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The death toll from a powerful earthquake and several strong aftershocks continued to rise Thursday and Indonesian officials said the figure was likely to increase significantly in the coming days.

Indonesia’s disaster management agency said at least 46 people were killed by the 7.1 magnitude quake that struck the principal island of Java on Wednesday afternoon, rocking the province of West Java and causing panic throughout the country’s most populous region.

Rescue workers continued to search Thursday for survivors among thousands of collapsed buildings along Java’s southwestern coast. Dozens of people were also reportedly buried beneath a landslide that was triggered by the quake in Cianjur, about 60 miles south of the capital, Jakarta.

Officials said Thursday it remained difficult to determine the extent of damage because communications had been knocked out in a number of coastal villages.

The earthquake was felt throughout Java, where half of Indonesia’s 240 million people live, and as far away as the resort island of Bali.

Many Indonesians feared a possible repeat of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2004 that killed some 170,000 people in the country’s northernmost province of Aceh.

That quake, with a 9.1 magnitude, struck off the western coast of northern Sumatra and created tsunamis that rolled across Aceh and into the Indian Ocean. In all, 227,898 people were killed, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Since then, Indonesia has been hit by 29 quakes of 6.3 magnitude or higher.

A tsunami warning issued minutes after the quake on Wednesday was quickly canceled.

Indonesia’s state news agency reported that the tsunami early warning system installed following the 2004 tsunami failed to work in several areas along Java’s coast following Wednesday’s earthquake.
