Major flooding - rural residents advised to boil water

We've had some major windstorms and heavy rains that resulted in extensive flooding - about 43,000 square miles. Many rural residents must boil their water until their well tests show it's safe from water contaminated by outhouses. Major rivers have changed course, undercutting building foundations and leaving some homes isolated on newly created "islands".

TO CONTINUE TO SLOWLY FALL THROUGH FRIDAY. HOWEVER KENAI LAKE LEVELS
WILL REMAIN ABOVE FLOOD STAGE THROUGH THURSDAY.

A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED.
STREAM RISES WILL BE SLOW AND FLASH FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED.

As flood-stricken residents of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough continued to clean up Tuesday, those living farther south on the Kenai Peninsula dealt with high water of their own.

With state and local emergency officials still in response mode, it's difficult to guess how many Kenai Peninsula homes or businesses have seen flooding, said Brenda Ahlberg, a spokeswoman for the Kenai Peninsula Borough. The first priority was to make sure residents were safe and that roads stayed open to traffic before an "assessment phase" could begin, Ahlberg said.

"You're talking about one end of the peninsula to the other," Ahlberg said. "The estimate, and I think it's a conservative estimate, is 14,000 people have been affected either directly or indirectly by the flooding. And that's homeowners and those who are affected by the inability to use roads and bridges."

Gov. Declares State Disaster for Communities

State Increases Aid and Support to Boroughs

September 21, 2012, Talkeetna, Alaska ? After surveying the extent of flooding in the Mat-Su Valley by helicopter and landing to meet with evacuated residents of the Talkeetna area, Governor Sean Parnell made a verbal declaration of a state disaster for the Mat-Su and Kenai Peninsula Boroughs, as well as other impacted areas.

?While the full extent of the damage remains unknown, it is apparent that the high winds and severe flooding will leave communities in need of state assistance to recover,? said Governor Sean Parnell. ?The emergency responders and managers in the local jurisdictions have done a tremendous job addressing the needs of Alaskans. While I had a chance to visit the Mat-Su region today, I recognize many Alaskans across the state have been impacted by the extreme weather.?
