Scrub typhus surfaces in Nagpur too

Nagpur: A disease generally associated with agricultural labourers and villagers, scrub typhus has been raising its head in the cities too. Several hospitals in the city have seen proven or suspected cases of the infection in the last couple of months.
Last year, around the same time, three cases of the disease were reported at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), the first time the disease was reported in Central India. Infectious disease specialist Dr Ashwini Tayade said she had seen at least ten patients with the disease in different hospitals over last couple of months. "Most cases are easily confused with other illnesses like malaria or leptospirosis. Perhaps, doctors here would not think of scrub typhus as it is not very common in this area," she said. Having seen several cases while working in Chennai, she suggested the doctors to get the patients tested for scrub typhus as well.
