Experts warn of rise in H1N1 cases as first swine flu death is reported this year
Last year, there were 1,126 cases of swine flu in Pune, and out of 153 deaths, a total of 50 were residents of the city, Sabne added.

The city recorded the first swine flu (H1N1) death on Monday as a 72-year-old man from Kharadi died at Inlaks and Budhrani hospital here. Dr Anjali Sabne, acting deputy medical officer of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said that the patient was also suffering from coronary artery disease when he was detected with swine flu.
The victim suffered from symptoms like cold and cough from December 29 and got admitted to the hospital on December 30. His swab tested positive for H1N1 virus and he was immediately given Tamiflu (anti-viral medication). However, he succumbed on January 4.

Four die of swine flu in state

Pune: Swine flu claimed four lives and infected seven people in the state this month, so far. Among the casualties, three were reported from different hospitals in Pune city while one from Ahmednagar.

As many as six deaths and 29 positive cases of swine flu were reported in January last year. "The virus transmission increases during winter and rainy seasons as they provide conducive atmosphere for all types of influenza viruses to propagate and spread. Compared to last year, we have reported less number of cases and deaths due to swine flu this time around," said a state health official.

Free swine flu vaccination for health workers

Pune: The benefit of free swine flu vaccination has been extended to other risk groups, including health workers.
It was initially offered to pregnant women in their first trimester and later to people suffering from diabetes and hypertension co-infection.
In its latest directives issued last week, the state government has directed the health department to offer free vaccination to people with either diabetes or hypertension and health workers as well.

Swine flu has infected 18 people in the state so far this year and claimed five lives in Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar. The condition of two patients with swine flu is currently critical and they have been put on ventilator support.

She was admitted to KEM Hospital on February 11.Her condition, however, worsened and she was put on ventilator later. She also had other underlying medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, ischemic heart disease and hypothyroidism. "Currently, condition of three patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator support at different hospitals across the city," said a health officer of Pune Municipal Corporation.

H1N1 cases surge, 7 dead in Pune this year

Pune: The number of H1N1 patients and casualties have increased across the state in the last few days. Maharashtra has reported 11 H1N1 deaths so far this year. Of the casualties, two deaths were reported from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad in the last three days.

The region is also seeing the most number of H1N1-related deaths in the state. with 7 of 11 swine flu casualties in state, Seven people died of the contagion at hospitals in Pune (6) and Pimpri Chinchwad (1) since the beginning of the year. The remaining four deaths were reported from hospitals in Latur, Akola, Nashik and Nagpur.

Two more succumb to swine flu, toll now three

Nashik: Swine flu has claimed two lives in the district this month, bringing the tally to three deaths in 2016 so far. Eleven more people were also infected with swine flu.
Officials of the district health department said that the situation is under control so far when compared to last year which saw the disease claiming 87 lives.
A 40-year-old woman Nanda Ganpat Sahane, a resident of Nalwadi, who was admitted to a private hospital on March 12, passed away on March 15. Another patient Sudhakar Suryawanshi, who was admitted to a private hospital on March 1, passed away on March 13.

[h=1]Woman dies of H1N1, one more critical[/h]
Pune: A 52-year-old woman, of Bawdhan Khurd in Pune district, died of H1N1 at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

With this, the number of casualties of the disease in the city this year has gone up to eight. Of the eight, only three were local residents, while the rest had sought treatment at hospitals in the city and died during the course of treatment.

Currently, the condition of one more person found infected with the virus is critical .


The woman developed influenza-like illness on April 9. She had mild breathlessness with fever and cough. She initially sought medical care at a hospital in Bhugaon.


However, her condition worsened and she was shifted to Krishna Hospital in Pune on April 12. She developed acute kidney failure during the course of treatment and was shifted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on April 17 as she needed dialysis support.


A patient of hypertension, the woman became comatose. She developed H1N1-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with sepsis and multi-organ failure, and died at 12.40pm on Wednesday.


As many as 25 people have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of this year.

Four swine flu deaths in district

Nashik: Swine flu has claimed four lives in the district so far this year, while 11 others have tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
Among the deceased, one was from Nashik city, one each from Sinnar, Jalgaon and Nandurbar, who took treatment in private hospitals.
District health officials said a 45-year-old resident of Nandurbar, Ashok Patil, died during treatment at a private hospital in April. Earlier, 40-year-old Nanda Sahane from Nalwadi, Sinnar succumbed to the disease in March and Sudhakar Suryawanshi of Jalgaon died in the same month during treatment.
At the beginning of the year, 28-year-old Shirish Ghodupkar, resident of Jail Road in Nashik Road, died during treatment at a private hospital in January.

As per the health authorities, there have been fewer recorded cases of swine flu and related deaths in Pune this year

Compensation is given to the victims but families who provided sufficient documents are also reimbursed. In Pune, out of 25 critically ill swine flu patients ? 16 were men and 9 women. Out of this, one man and two women died.

[h=1]Noble records season?s first H1N1-related death[/h]
Pune's Noble hospital on Tuesday evening registered the first death this monsoon caused by influenza A H1N1. The 68-year-old patient had developed clinical symptoms in July, when he had participated in the Wari.

The patient had travelled from Alandi to Saswad and then to Phaltan, before the doctors in Akluj identified the symptoms. After an X-ray, he was immediately referred to the facility located at Hadapsar, where he tested positive for the disease. He had also developed acute respiratory distress syndrome along with sepsis and was on ventilator ever since.

"The patient came to us on July 11. On admission, it was observed that he was suffering from pneumonia and had comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension and ischemic heart disease," said Dr HK Sale, executive director of Noble Hospital.
