Nagpur: Swine flu is raising its head again in the city with three people testing positive and two people dead because of the infection in the first week of September itself. Between January and April this year, swine flu claimed 120 lives while sporadic incidents were seen in the subsequent months. This trend has left doctors worried.

The death of a 21-year-old woman marked the third swine flu death in the city in a month and a half. It also took the total number of deaths from the infection that have taken place in the city in 2015 to 129. The two other deaths that took place this month were that of a 54-year-old man from Kalmeshwar and a 56-year-old man from rural Nagpur.

PUNE: Two women, including a resident of Yerawada, died of swine flu in the city on Sunday and Monday, taking the total number of H1N1 casualties here to 107 this year.

Seven fresh cases of swine flu were reported on Monday, while the condition of 17 patients remained critical at different hospitals across the city.

A forty-year-old woman from Keraskar Peth in Satara developed influenza-like illness on August 27. She initially sought treatment at a private hospital in Satara, which referred her to Pune for better medical care. She was admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on Saturday. A patient of rheumatoid arthritis with hypertension, the woman was put on pressure control mode ventilator the same day. She suffered cardiac arrest on Sunday, but was revived with the help of cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Pune: Only 1k pregnant women avail of free swine flu vaccination

PUNE: The state government's move to vaccinate pregnant women against swine flu has garnered lukewarm response.

Only around a 1,000 women across the state have been vaccinated against the virus since the government started 51 new vaccination centres on September 1.

The state government aims to vaccinate one lakh women by September-end. The centres provide free vaccination to women in the second and third trimester of pregnancy.

PUNE: Four persons died of swine flu in Nashik, Satara and Pune, while 29 people turned critical and were put on ventilator at different hospitals across the state on Tuesday.

Emphasising on personal hygiene, the state health officials have advised people to exercise caution during the upcoming Ganeshotsav. "The 10-day Ganeshotsav, which will start from next week, sees devotees thronging religious places across the state. This may lead to easy spread of the disease. Therefore, people have been advised to exercise caution during the festivities," the officials said.

With a death/ confirmed case ratio running at >35% it would appear that Aurangabad does not have a comprehensive influenza testing regime. Seeing as they have missed the other likely tens of thousands of cases in the district, you can see how confirmed cases and deaths in India are a tiny fraction of reality. -Ro

PUNE: Swine flu has hurt Maharashtra the most.

The state has recorded the highest number of swine flu cases and deaths this year in the country. According to the latest report released by the Union health ministry, as many as 6,843 swine flu cases and 623 casualties were reported in the state till end-August. Worse even, 38 swine flu deaths and 378 cases were reported in the first eight days of September.

With four months yet to go for the year to end, Maharashtra has already recorded 667 swine flu deaths. The toll for 2010, when the state saw the most number of H1N1 fatalities, was 669.


After Nagpur, where 70 people died of swine flu, Mumbai has recorded the second most number of deaths at 61. At present, 27 people in the state are seriously ill with the infection, depending on ventilator support, and another 400 are being treated at several hospitals.

In at least 40% of the reported deaths, the patient did not have any pre-existing illness that could have triggered the worsening of symptoms.

Worst H1N1 year for Maharashtra as toll crosses 2010 peak, climbs to 674

MUMBAI: The state is officially in the midst of its worst-ever H1N1 influenza outbreak. On Friday, the deaths caused by the virus reached an annual high of 674, surpassing the toll in 2009 and 2010, when a global pandemic was raging.

There were 286 and 669 deaths reported in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The count of positive cases, too, has long breached all past records to reach 7,300 this year. Union health ministry statistics reveal that the state is the worst affected with the highest number of cases and deaths in the country this year.

"We have already seen two influenza peaks this year, which is very unusual. With an outbreak in February and March, people should have got the immunity. However, we saw a second outbreak of sorts in August again," said Dr Tanu Singhal, paediatric infectious disease consultant at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital.

Swine flu rears head in peak Parvani period in Nashik

NASHIK: Two more swine flu-related deaths have been reported from the city. In August, 12 people had succumbed to the disease. This year, the total number of swine flu-related deaths has increased to 60, the highest, so far, since 2009. The district administration, however, maintains that the situation is under control.

With respect to the Kumbh, the administration has made arrangement at Nashik as well as Trimbakeshwar, where the Kumbh Parvanis are taking place.

Of the total deaths from the disease, 26 are males and 34 females. Cases of fatality are highest among the swine flu-affected patients aged above 55 years as well as those in the 36 years to 45 years age group.

[h=1]30% Mumbai swine flu deaths in 48 hrs of hospital admission: Report[/h] An audit report of swine deaths in the city has revealed that 30% of the deaths were reported in 48 hours of admission to hospital, said Dr Deepak Sawant, state health minister.
While in 2010, the virus killed 55 people on an average in a month, 2015 has seen average 75 swine flu deaths in Maharashtra. In 2010, during the pandemic, there were 669 deaths in the state.
"During the swine flu death audit, we found that 30% died within 48 hours of hospitalisation. Most of these people had secondary ailments, like diabetes and hypertension, or were immuno-compromised," said Sawant.
Nearly half of the reported swine flu deaths in Mumbai took medical help after the sixth day of onset of the disease, shows the audit done by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. While till 2014 it was known that H1N1 virus thrived in cold and dry weather, this has changed over the last year. The state epidemiologist said that a maximum number of swine flu deaths have happened in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.

Swine flu claims five more lives in Maharashtra

PUNE: Swine flu claimed five more lives in the state on Saturday, while the condition of 34 patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator support.

Two persons died in Thane while one death each was reported in Beed, Ahmednagar and Parbhani.

Of the 34 critical patients, 20 are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Pune city. Four patients each are being treated in Mumbai and Pimpri Chinchwad while two patients are in the critical care treatment in Kalyan. Three patients are on ventilator support in hospitals in Kolhapur.

"The five who died had associated illnesses other than swine flu which worsened their condition. We recorded 58 new cases on Saturday. With this, the number of positive cases has gone up to 7,497 so far this year," said a state health official.

PUNE: A 45-year-old woman, resident of Kondhwa Khurd in Pune city, died of swine flu in a private hospital, taking the number of swine flu deaths to 113, this year.

Of these, 41 were local residents while the rest were referred to hospitals in Pune city from adjoining areas. Currently, the condition of 15 patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator support in different hospitals in Pune.

The woman developed influenza-like illness from August 27. She initially sought medical care in a neighbourhood hospital. Her condition later worsened and she was referred to Ruby Hall Clinic on September 4 where she was put on pressure control mode ventilator support. However, her condition deteriorated. She developed swine flu induced multi-organ failure and died at 6.30am on September 16.

Swine Flu claimed two more lives in Thane, taking the death toll over 30.

According to an official release from the Health Department, an alert has been sounded in Thane which has come under attack from the H1N1 virus since January.

Last month, the spread of the virus was tracked to the neighbouring Kalyan-Dombivali, where former mayor Vaijanti Gholap and Shiv Sena leader Ravi Patil also fell victim to the disease.

With more than 127 screening centers activated in Thane to diagnose patients, around 1.22 lakh citizens have been checked so far in an attempt to control the spread of the virus.

In the past one week, three people have died due to H1N1.

PUNE: Civic health officials confirmed four swine flu deaths on Friday. Of the four victims, two were local residents of Pune city, and the other two had come to Pune from adjoining areas to seek medical treatment.

The number of swine flu casualties in Pune city is at 117 so far, this year. Of the 117 victims, 43 were local residents, while the rest were referred to hospitals in Pune for better medical care.

Meanwhile, five more people tested positive for swine flu in Pune city on Friday. With this, the number of confirmed cases has gone up to 1,003 this year.

Shirur man succumbs to swine flu

PUNE: A 45-year-old man from the rural parts of Pune succumbed to swine flu, taking the total number of H1N1 casualties to 118 this year, so far. Currently, the condition of 11 patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator in different hospitals across the city.

The victim, a resident of village Karandi in Shirur taluka, developed influenza-like illness on September 7. He had fever, cough, vomiting and breathlessness. He initially sought treatment in private hospitals in Shikrapur. However, after his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune where he was admitted on September 12.

No mutation of virus, but swine flu toll rising

Swine flu claimed four more lives in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad on Monday, but health authorities have sought to allay fears of H1N1 virus mutating.Dr M S Chadda, Deputy Director of National Institute of Virology (NIV), said there was no mutation of the H1N1 virus and that the severity of the virus remained the same.
Pandemic influenza rates, however, are higher this year, almost comparable to that of 2010 when there were 6,700 cases of swine flu and 669 deaths. This year, there have been 6,645 cases of swine flu and 713 deaths across Maharashtra since January, Dr Pradip Awate, state?s surveillance officer, said.

A 34-year-old woman from Pune Cantonment developed influenza-like illness on September 4. She had fever with cough, throat pain, nausea and breathlessness. She initially sought medical treatment from a private medical practitioner. She was later admitted to Inamdar Hospital where she was put on ventilator. She suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead around 7.30am on Sunday.

A 32-year-old man from Rase village in Khed taluka developed influenza-like illness on September 3. He initially sought treatment from a private hospital in Chakan. He was later referred to Ruby Hall Clinic where he died following a cardiac arrest around 9.30am on Monday. Both the victims had tested positive for swine flu. tnn

He added that she was initially put on a 24-hour observation and then on the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine which takes up the function of an external temporary lung."The machine takes blood from the patient's thigh vein, purifies it and puts it back into the neck vein. This gives the patient's lungs room to heal and help them function on their own," he said. The procedure reduced her already low oxygen levels to around 44 per cent, making it essential for a support system.
