The H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district widened on Thursday after three more poultry farms in Navapur tested positive for bird flu, prompting authorities to expand containment operations and intensify culling measures that could push the number of birds culled past four lakh.

Officials identified Palawala, Sakisma and Ashraf Poultry farms as fresh infection clusters. All three farms are located within a 3-km radius of Diamond Poultry farm, where bird flu was first confirmed on April 30.

“With these new positive samples, we will now create separate containment circles around each of the three farms. These locations were earlier under surveillance zones, but will now undergo active culling operations,” said Dr Sanjay Kachane, Deputy Commissioner, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Nandurbar...

Rising Bird Flu Threat in Nandurbar: Administration on High Alert; Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
New Delhi (BBC News) |

The spread of the H5N1 bird flu infection in the Nawapur region of Maharashtra's Nandurbar district has heightened concerns for both the administration and the Health Department. Large-scale operations are currently underway in the affected areas to contain the spread of the infection. Under the supervision of the administration, thousands of infected and suspected chickens have been culled, while poultry farms and markets are being kept under strict surveillance.

The District Administration, the Animal Husbandry Department, and the Health Department are jointly conducting continuous sample testing, surveys, and surveillance drives. Sanitization efforts have been intensified in and around the affected areas, and individuals associated with the poultry trade have been instructed to exercise extreme caution.
The Health Department has appealed to the general public to refrain from making unnecessary visits to poultry markets and infected zones for the time being. People have been advised against consuming chicken, eggs, or any suspected poultry products sold in open-air markets. As far as possible, it is recommended to prioritize a vegetarian diet or a light liquid diet for a short period. If consuming non-vegetarian food is unavoidable, one should consume only thoroughly cooked meals.

Experts state that bird flu can spread through infected birds, their droppings, or objects that have come into contact with them. Consequently, people are advised to avoid handling dead birds and to immediately report any suspicious situations to the administration. Specific advisories have been issued urging children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions to exercise extra caution.

The administration has clarified that the situation is being continuously monitored and action will be taken against those spreading rumors. People have been urged to rely solely on government and official information. The testing of new samples is underway to ensure that the infection can be brought under control in a timely manner and any major threat can be averted.

Nandurbar: Following the detection of a Bird Flu outbreak in the Navapur tehsil of the Nandurbar district in Maharashtra, the Health Department has taken precautionary measures.

A full-fledged team of 22 staff, including medical doctors, have been deployed to take preventive measures. As part of it, medical examinations are being conducted on employees of the affected poultry farms, as well as on personnel from the Animal Husbandry Department who participated in the culling operations of the affected poultry. Blood samples have been collected from nine people and have been sent to a laboratory in Pune for testing.

Samples sent for testing

"Health department has deployed a full team of 22 medical staff to inspect the poultry farms at Navapur after the outbreak of bird flu. 2 officers, 8 CHO and five health workers. They conducted a survey to check if any workers had also been afflicted with bird flu. They undertook preventive measures. We have been distributing Tamiflu tablets too," Dr Ravindra Sonawane, District Health Officer, Nandurbar, told ETV Bharat.

"We have been conducting tests of people working in the poultry farms and have sent 9 samples for further testing to ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune. This is also part of the preventive measures," added Sonawane.

This process is being implemented by the administration as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential human from getting infected.

Culling of poultry

Large-scale culling operations are currently underway at affected poultry farms in the Nawapur area, and joint efforts are being made by the Animal Husbandry Department, the Health Department, and the Revenue Administration to bring the situation under control. Among the measures, the teams have begun sanitising and disinfecting the premises and are involved in taking preventive measures on the affected poultry farms.

The district health department has urged citizens in the affected areas to remain vigilant and has instructed them to immediately contact a health centre if they observe symptoms like fever, cough, or respiratory distress. Furthermore, directives have been issued to avoid unnecessary crowding in the vicinity of the poultry farms, while the culling measures are underway.

Dr Sonawane said, "The administration is continuously monitoring the situation, and all necessary measures to prevent the transmission of Bird Flu to humans are being implemented on a war footing. Blood and swab samples from suspected individuals have been collected and sent to the laboratory."

Action plan in progress

Special teams have been deployed by the Health Department in the affected areas. Regular health check-ups of poultry farm employees and members of the culling teams are being conducted by the District Health Department. Medicines, masks, sanitisers, and PPE kits have been made available in the affected regions.

Two veterinary department staffers involved in culling operations developed flu-like symptoms and were isolated as a precaution.
May 18, 2026 09:49 PM IST

Maharashtra has reported its first suspected human cases of avian influenza from Navapur in Nandurbar district, prompting the state administration to order RT-PCR testing for all personnel engaged in culling and containment operations in the outbreak zone.

The two suspected cases involve veterinary staff members Ashok Lalsing Pawar (49) and Indas Govlya Valvi (36), both of whom were directly involved in bird flu control measures. Suspected human avian flu cases in Navapur trigger mass screening of frontline workers
May 18, 2026 09:49 PM IST

Excerpts:

Maharashtra has reported its first suspected human cases of avian influenza from Navapur in Nandurbar district, prompting the state administration to order RT-PCR testing for all personnel engaged in culling and containment operations in the outbreak zone.
-snip-

She added that while human avian influenza infections often begin with mild flu-like symptoms, it can escalate into severe respiratory illness, pneumonia and breathing complications within five to seven days if not identified early.

“Patients with suspected exposure are isolated immediately, monitored closely, and treated with antiviral medicines such as Tamiflu along with supportive care including hydration, antibiotics and oxygen support where necessary. Early detection is critical,” she said
-snip-

“Today, surveillance, testing and treatment systems are significantly stronger, allowing us to respond quickly and prevent complications,” she said.

Following the incident, a three-member team deputed by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) visited Nandurbar on May 13. The visit was aimed at reviewing preparedness and containment measures following the outbreak. The team was led by Dr Vikas Janardan Gode, Deputy Assistant Public Health Officer, Pune, and included Dr Srikant Malegaonkar, Assistant Professor of Pulmonary Medicine at AIIMS Nagpur and Dr Pooja Shendre, Assistant Professor of Microbiology at AIIMS Nagpur.
-snip-

Dr Vinay Sonewane, Nandurbar Civil Surgeon, said the district has ramped up preparedness by stockpiling antiviral medicines, conducting mandatory RT-PCR screening for all frontline workers, and preparing a dedicated 10-bed ICU near the outbreak zone.

“We currently have 50 strips of Tamiflu and have placed orders for 1,000 more. Every worker deployed in bird flu operations is being screened, provided PPE kits and prophylactic antiviral medication. If symptoms emerge, they are immediately shifted for medical evaluation,” he said.

Authorities said Maharashtra has not recorded any human deaths linked to avian influenza so far.

Navapur poultry farmers await compensation as culling crosses 4 lakh birds

Navapur in Nandurbar district supplies nearly 10 lakh eggs daily to Mumbai, Nashik, Jalgaon and Surat. From May 1 to May 17, a total of 4,06,682 chickens have been culled, 24,91,723 eggs and 5,48,958 kg of feed have been destroyed in Navapur

More than 20 days after bird flu-triggered culling operations began in Maharashtra’s Navapur, poultry farmers say they are yet to receive compensation, worsening the financial crisis in one of western India’s largest egg-producing hubs.
-snip-
Poultry farmers alleged that unlike previous outbreaks, compensation has not been released despite mandatory post-culling sanitisation protocols requiring repeated disinfection, litter removal and a fallow period before farms can resume operations.

“During the last two outbreaks, compensation was provided within 48 hours of culling. This time, we are being told there are no funds available. Farmers are struggling to arrange money for sanitisation and labour,” said Arief Balesaria, head of the Navapur Poultry Association and owner of Wasim B Poultry Farm.
-snip-

Meanwhile, officials admitted that shortage of funds has delayed culling operations involving backyard poultry and exotic birds in affected villages.

Dr Sanjay Khachane, District Deputy Commissioner of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, said authorities had completed culling and testing at commercial farms, but backyard bird culling had not yet begun as residents were demanding immediate cash compensation.

There are around 10,000 backyard birds in affected areas. We are working with the central and state governments to make funds available soon,” Khachane said.
