Four more down with swine flu in Pune

PUNE: Four more persons tested positive for swine flu on Friday, taking the number of H1N1 infected people in Pune to 15, this month.

"Among the four, the condition of a 62-year-old man from Shivajinagar is critical. He is on non-invasive ventilator at Sanjeevan Hospital," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The condition of three others is stable. "They are being treated at different hospitals in Pune," Pardeshi said.

Among them, a 27-year-old woman from Pune Camp is being treated at Jehangir Hospital. The 23-year-old woman from Laxminagar, Yerawada has been home quarantined, and a 37-year-old from Kharadi is being treated at Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital.

18 test positive for H1N1 in 1 day

The H1N1 virus is spreading at an alarming rate, with 18 new positive cases being detected on Saturday. This is the highest number of positive cases detected on a single day since January this year. The toll of swine flu cases has risen to 196, with 134 cases being reported in July alone.
Of the 18 patients who tested positive, four are children and two are senior citizens.

Mumbai H1N1 tally hits 200 mark

MUMBAI: The count of positive cases for H1N1 influenza virus touched 200 in Mumbai on Sunday. While, experts don't term it as a "resurgence", civic officials say 138 cases were detected in July.

In the last four months, 62 positive cases were reported. However, only six cases were reported throughout the year in 2011 and in July last year there was not a single case of H1N1 in the city.

Between Saturday and Sunday, 22 people have tested positive for the virus. Of the 18 positive cases on Saturday, five were children and seven women from different parts of the city. While on Sunday, four people, including a one-year-old child tested positive for H1N1. Among adults who tested positive are a 27-year-old woman from Malad, a 63-year-old man from Jogeshwari, and a 32-year-old man from Bandra.

H1N1 death in Navi Mumbai, toll in Maharashtra rises to 30

MUMBAI: A 20-year-old pregnant woman from Raigad succumbed to H1N1 in Navi Mumbai last week, taking the state toll for the infection this year to 30?the highest in the country. This was also the third death in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) this month.

The latest victim, Soniya Pohal, was brought to D Y Patil Hospital on Saturday after her symptoms?fever and cold?intensified. Officials from Raigad said she had also developed breathlessness. Doctors said Pohal, who died on Sunday, did not have any underlying illness.

Another swine flu death, the seventh since March in PCMC area has been reported with a 35-year-old man succumbing to the virus. The man admitted to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital on July 27 died two days later and swab test reports from National Institute of Virology confirmed swine flu.

Old Sangvi resident Milind Shivaji Dixit, 37, had fever, cough and was breathless when he was admitted to the hospital. Doctors said he showed no co-morbid conditions, a fact they said made it imperative for people to get themselves treated by doctors instead of resorting to self-medication.

Sangvi resident dies of swine flu

PUNE: The throat swab report of a 37-year-old man who died at a private hospital in Thergaon on Sunday returned positive for swine flu on Tuesday.

This is the first death caused by H1N1 influenza in Pimpri-Chinchwad and the second in Pune district this monsoon, officials said.

9 more test H1N1 positive

MUMBAI: The number of H1N1 cases touched 213 after nine people, including three toddlers, tested positive on Wednesday. Three adults had to be hospitalized. Two two-year-old girls from Powai and Andheri and a nine month old boy from Ghatkopar were among those who tested positive. All the patients were treated on an OPD basis except a 28-year-old girl from Marine Lines, 63-year-old woman from Kamathipura and 69-year-old man from Kandivali, who had to be hospitalised.

A 19-year-old Chembur resident and a 44-year-old nurse from Nerul succumbed to swine flu-related ailments on Wednesday, taking the total number of swine flu deaths in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to four. From January this year, 35 people have died of the H1N1 virus in the state.
Vinay Talewar, 19, who died at Kasturba Hospital, Chinkpokli, is the first Mumbai resident to succumb to the virus in the last two years. In April, a 23-year-old pregnant woman from Dhule had died of swine flu-related ailments at JJ Hospital.

Maharashtra health officials worried over rising cases of swine flu

The death of Vinay Talewar, a 19-year-old youth from Chembur in Mumbai, is giving health experts a severe chill. Vinay died at the civic run Kasturba hospital on Wednesday. While this is the first fatality of swine flu in Mumbai city in close to two years, what is worrying state health officials is this year's rapid rise of people contracting swine flu.

Last year the state saw 316 positive cases of swine flu. This year till July, Mumbai alone has seen 213 positive cases of H1N1 virus.

In the last couple of months three people have died of swine flu in the city's hospitals. However, those who died were from outside Mumbai and were brought to the city after their condition worsened.

Doctors said that with the rains bringing the temperature down the virus may claim more lives as it thrives in the monsoon and which is why there is an increased rate of people contracting the disease.

17 test positive for H1n1 virus on saturday

Seventeen people, including five children, tested positive for swine flu or the H1N1 influenza virus on Saturday. Civic officials said that three of these patients were admitted to hospitals and are stable.

A 19-year-old Chembur resident, Vinay Talekar, had succumbed to swine flu-related ailments on Wednesday at Kasturba Hospital in Byculla. Since January this year, 35 people have died of the H1N1 virus in the state.
BMC executive health officer, Dr Arun Bamne, said, ?Currently, we do not have any patient who is seriously ill. All patients, including the ones who were admitted on Saturday are stable.? While one patient is admitted to a private hospital, the other two patients are admitted to the KEM Hospital.
In another development, on Saturday, Dr Bamne sent a show cause notice to superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Dr Umesh Aigal asking why he did not inform the epidemiological cell of civic body, which is in the same campus, after the Talekar died on Wednesday.
?We should be informed at the earliest in case of a swine flu death. In Talekar?s case, I was informed at 9 pm in the night,? said Dr Bamne.

Swine flu claimed one more victim in the city on Monday, when Parvati Pikle, 72, a Malad resident, succumbed to the H1N1 virus at the civic-run Kasturba Hospital, Chinchpokli. Pikle is the second person in the city to succumb to swine flu virus this year. There were no swine flu deaths last year.

Swine flu: 4 new cases detected in Mumbai


Mumbai: Four new cases of H1N1 were detected taking the toll to 250 positive cases in the city this year.

A 32-year-old man from Jogeshwari, a 75-year-old woman from Bandra, a 48-year-old and another 45-year-old man from Malad were tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Tuesday. Atleast 37 cases of swine flu have been detected in August.

?Two of the patients have been admitted in private hospitals while the other two are being treated as out patients. All the patients have been administered Tamiflu, and are now stable,? said Dr Mangala Gomare, chief epidemiologist at BMC.

Five more test positive for swine flu


PUNE: Five more people tested positive for H1N1 influenza on Wednesday. "Three of them were discharged after treatment but two are still being treated. Their condition is stable," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health, PMC.

The condition of a 57-year-old man, who has been on ventilator support at Sahyadri Munot Hospital since August 4 continues to be critical, say Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials.

The city has reported 11 positive cases and one death this month. Since April, 166 people have tested positive and 8 people have succumbed to the contagion.
