32-year-old woman first H1N1 victim this season

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old woman from Ambernath became the first H1N1 victim victim of the dreaded H1N1 infection in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region this monsoon season, succumbing to the ailment on Wednesday.

She had been brought to the civic-run Sion Hospital on August 1 where she was diagnosed with the viral infection following complaints of.

Sources at the hospital said that the patient was brought to the hospital on August 1 with complaints of breathlessness, fever with chills, sore throat and a severe headache. The woman was admitted to the hospital's ICU at the of Sion Hospital as her condition kept deteriorating.

"The patient developed viral pneumonia, which developed into acute respiratory distress syndrome," said a doctor at the hospital. The hospital had no clarity on whether the victim was given Tamiflu soon after contracting the infection in Ambernath or not.

The BMC's epidemiologist, Dr Mangala Gomare, said that so far in Mumbai, there had been 37 positive H1N1 cases but no deaths. Recently, a pregnant woman was diagnosed with the infection and admitted to Kasturba Hospital. Maharashtra has witnessed the highest number of H1N1 deaths in the country after Gujarat and Rajasthan this year.

Pinky Verma, 24, a resident of Navi Mumbai, was initially admitted to a private hospital where the doctors suspected her of suffering from H1N1, and was later shifted to Kasturba Hospital.

A senior state health official said, “This year we are witnessing more H1N1 cases in Kolhapur, Pune and Nashik. Pregnant women and elderly with co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are at higher risk of contracting swine flu.”

AURANGABAD: A 31-year-old pregnant woman from Kannad taluka died of swine flu complications, taking the Aurangabad region's H1N1 death toll to two so far, this month.

"Ujwala Gayake, a resident of Shivnagar village in Kannad taluka in Aurangabad district, was in the last month of her second trimester. She succumbed to the diseases on August 8 while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital," said the deputy director heath, Aurangabad circle, D N Patil.

He said, "Gayake developed influenza-like symptoms since last week. She had fever and cough and later developed breathlessness. She sought medical treatment for the first three days at a private hospital. However, when her condition deteriorated, she was admitted at the GMCH on August 6."

61% of H1N1 victims in Maharashtra young and fit

MUMBAI: The H1N1 infection appears to have zeroed in on the young and the healthy this year. An analysis of the 105 statewide deaths has revealed around 61% of the victims did not have any co-morbid condition.

Also, 44 out of the 105 deceased, around 42%, were in their 20s and 30s. Three teenagers were also among those who succumbed while two infants, including a one-month-old, were among its youngest victims. Another 25 each were in the age groups of 41 to 50 and 51 to 70. Five senior citizens aged 71 to 80 also fell prey to the viral infection that caused a global pandemic in 2009.

Experts, surprised at the trend, advise maximizing surveillance activities. Dr Om Srivastava, director, department of infectious diseases at Jaslok Hospital, said, "It is unusual and the reasons may be difficult to pinpoint. If the young without other health conditions are falling prey to the virus, then we need to find out if they are getting treatment at the right time, or if the duration of treatment is correct."

A state official said there is no change in the strain and that Tamiflu is still as effective.

The 32-year-old Badlapur woman who succumbed to the infection on Wednesday did not have a history of illnesses, except high sugar. Dr Sanjay Kamble, deputy director, Thane circle, said they are finding out if she had received doses of Tamiflu at the right time.

Till last year, those with chronic ailments, the elderly and pregnant women, were the most vulnerable. Yet, only 39% of the deceased had ailments.

Maharashtra has been one of the worst affected states losing over 1,100 lives in four years since the virus' outbreak. This year, too, it is in the top three with the highest deaths after Gujarat with 196 followed by Rajasthan's 163. Nationwide, there have been 4,868 cases and 610 deaths. In Mumbai, cases have been under control with no deaths and 37 positive cases.

A state official told TOI they were closely monitoring the situation. As for Mumbai, Srivastava said, "Not all cases may come under the radar. Some may be suffering from sub-clinical infection while others may be getting treated for influenza," he said, explaining what possibly kept the city immune when Pune suffered 31 deaths.

Pune: Swine flu claimed the life of a three-year-old girl on Saturday. According to reports, the victim, identified as Shramika A, died of H1N1 on Saturday at 4.45 am. She had Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome due to sepsis, along with H1N1. Shramika was sent for a swab test on July 15 and tested postive for H1N1 on July 17.

Shramika?s death took the H1N1 death toll in Pune to 32 so far, this year.

3 H1N1 deaths in Pune in 24 hours

Three people died of H1N1 influenza infection on August 10, taking the death toll in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad this year to 44.

The first death took place at 4.45am at the KEM Hospital. A 3-year-old girl died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to sepsis with H1N1 infection.

By 4pm, a 33-year-old man from Khed taluka died at Ruby Hall Clinic of pneumonia with refractory hypoximia. A 42 years old man from Dehu Malwadi area became the third victim. He was admitted to the PCMC?s Niramaya Hospital.

Meanwhile, six more people continue to be on ventilator support in various hospitals across the city.

With three more deaths being reported since Saturday, the swine flu toll has now gone up to 45 in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas this year. While 33 deaths have been reported from the Pune Municipal Corporation areas, the virus has claimed 12 lives in PCMC areas since January.

Another H1N1 death, 5 critical, 12 new cases

A 67-year-old man hailing from Bopakaon taluka in Purandar district who was admitted to Bharati Hospital at Katraj became the fourth person to succumb to swine flu infection in the last three days at various hospitals in the city.

The man died on August 11 at 5pm. The patient was reportedly delaying treatment. When finally he went to the doctor, his swab tests confirmed on August 1 that he was infected by swine flu.
He was immediately administered Tamiflu, but his condition went on worsening and he had to be shifted on a ventilator. The cause of his death, PMC officials said, was septic shock with acute kidney injury with bilateral pneumonia.

Meanwhile, five other patients continue to be on ventilator support while 12 more positive patients have been admitted to various city hospitals.

AURANGABAD: The Aurangabad police commissionerate is not taking any chances in curbing the spread of swine flu in its ranks. The families of the two policemen from the force, who were declared H1N1 negative by the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, have now been asked to undergo tests for H1N1 as well. Awareness drives are being arranged at the commissionerate premises, and according to senior officials, leaves will be granted immediately to policemen who exhibit symptoms of the disease.

Both the affected police officials, admitted to different city hospitals with swine flu-like symptoms on Saturday, had been put on ventilators. Throat swabs of both have tested negative for swine flu at the NIV. However, Aurangabad police officials maintained that the swabs may have tested negative, since they were collected a couple of days after the patients were treated with Tamiflu tablets.

"Soon after our men started showing the symptoms of swine flu, the doctors treating them sent their throat swabs to the local branch of a multinational laboratory, which confirmed that the two officials were infected with the H1N1 virus. Following this, they were treated with Tamiflu tablets for another two days. Their throat swabs were collected again and sent to the NIV, Pune, which stated that they are H1N1 negative. Doctors are of the opinion that the initial treatment of the patients with Tamiflu might have suppressed the virus and thus the NIV reports may have tested negative," Aurangabad police commissioner Sanjay Kumar told TOI.

36-year-old dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 36-year-old man from Shelpimpalgaon in the district died of swine flu at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital on Friday, taking the H1N1 death toll in Pimpri Chinchwad to 13 this year.

"Malhari Garud was admitted to the hospital on August 3. His throat swab tested positive for swine flu on August 6. He died at 9.20am on Friday," said a civic health official from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. As many as 43 people have tested positive for swine flu in Pimpri Chinchwad this year, so far.

"Four people are currently admitted in different hospitals in Pimpri Chinchwad with influenza like symptoms. Of them, one has tested positive for swine flu," the official added.

Pune city has recorded 34 swine flu deaths this year, so far. As many as 231 people have tested positive for swine flu in the city this year. Currently, condition of four people infected with swine flu is critical. They have been put on ventilator support.

Eight swine flu H1NI1 influenza positive patients died since the beginning of this year till date, in Aurangabad health division comprising four districts.

According to the health department source, Health division covering Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli districts there were 209 swine flu suspected Patients since January 1, 2013 onwards to August 15,2013.

The health department had screened nearly 18,000 patients in these districts so far. Of them, 209 patients suspected of swine flu were treated by giving them a dose of Tamiflu tablet.

The sources further said that swab samples of 17 patients were positive while eight of them lost their lives.

Pune sees 21 swine flu cases and four deaths in August

PUNE: As many as 21 people have tested positive for swine flu in Pune city till date this month. Among them, four have succumbed to the infection. The city has reported 24 confirmed swine flu cases last month. Six of them have died of the infection in July.

"There has been sudden rise in swine flu cases since July. We are continuously monitoring the situation. There is nothing to panic but people should observe all precautionary measures to keep the disease at bay," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The areas under Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recorded the 35th death due to swine flu (H1N1 virus) since January when Hiraman Mohol, 51, of Kothrud died on August 17 at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

The toll from Pune stands at 48 if the 13 deaths in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area too is taken into account.

Hiraman Jagnnath Mohol, a resident of Dagdi Khaan in Kothrud, developed influenza-like symptoms around July 23. A patient of hypertension, Mohol had consulted a neighbourhood doctor but that did not help. His breathlessness increased after which he was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on July 28.

Mohol was put on ventilator support the same day evening. His throat swab was sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), which confirmed swine flu on August 5. Mohol later developed acute respiratory distress syndrome with secondary bacterial infection which resulted in his death on August 17.

NAGPUR: Swine flu may no longer be considered a deadly disease and is being equated with any other influenza like fever but it continues to kill patients silently in region. As many as 25 have died of H1N1 infection in the region since January this year. The other two killer diseases, dengue and malaria, also have taken as many as 10 and 11 lives respectively in the region since January.

The swine flu deaths include seven confirmed and two suspected cases from city and nine from the region at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Malaria has killed two persons in Gondia, five in Chandrapur and four in Gadchiroli district.

Two more from Pune succumb to swine flu; toll 38

PUNE: Two persons from the city succumbed to swine flu on Saturday and Sunday, taking the H1N1 death toll in the city to 38 this year, so far.

"Pratibha Haribhakt (45), a resident of Kavadewadi in Koregaon Park and Chetan Shah (37), a resident of Dutt Nagar in Katraj, died of swine ionflu in different hospitals in the city. Both had tested positive for H1N1," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer, Pune Municipal Corporation.

Haribhakt had developed influenza-like symptoms on August 18, but she did not seek medical advice for the first two days. She consulted a doctor on August 20 after she started experiencing breathlessness. The doctor referred her to Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital for better medical attention.

An X-ray report showed that she was suffering from bilateral pneumonia. She was put on ventilator after her condition worsened on August 21. A patient of diabetes and hypertension, Pratibha tested positive for swine flu on Friday. She died at 10.35am on Sunday.
