Death toll rises to 6 due to jaundice in Ichalkaranji
Kolhapur, Jun 9 : A 29-year-old man, a resident of Ichalkaranji, died of jaundice at Chhatrapati Pramila Raje (CPR) hospital last evening, raising the toll to six.


Lalu Umaji Kale was admitted at CPR hospital seven days ago for treatment.

Twenty five people, suffering from jaundice, were discharged after treatment at the hospital.

At least 3200 suspected victims of jaundice, including 66 pregnant women, have been detected in the Ichalkaranji district. The state government said on Wednesday that efforts were on to contain the scourge.

More than 500 new cases of jaundice have been reported from the textile town of Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district in the last four days and the disease has killed at least 12 people in the last one month, officials said Monday. Kolhapur health department suspect that the consumption of contaminated water of Panchganga river by the people is the cause behind the recent rise in cases of jaundice in Ichalkaranji. ?Since May 15, there have been 3,803 cases of jaundice in the city and so far 12 people have already succumbed to the disease,? a city health official told IANS.

Ichalkaranji/Mumbai: The outbreak of Jaundice has caused havoc in Maharashtra town Ichalkaranji. Twenty-one people have died of jaundice in the last one month and over 3,500 more are still suffering. The situation is worse because the hospital in the town doesn't have an ICU.

The Kolhapur health department suspects the epidemic was caused by water department officials supplying contaminated water from the Panchganga river...

City authorities suspect the outbreak in the Ichalkaranji city was caused by contaminated water from the city's main Panchganga river. The city has a population of 300,000 and is situated 300 kilometres south of Mumbai.

"Fifteen people were killed in Ichalkaranji while three more were killed in its surrounding areas in the outbreak over the past month," the city's chief health official Sunil Sangewar said. Most deaths occurred in the past fortnight.

Epidemic Act invoked in Maharashtra

Maharashtra has invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act in the textile town of Icchalkaranji in the wake of 12 Hepatitis E deaths and over 4,085 people infected in a month.

Kolhapur civil surgeon Dr L Patil told The Indian Express that the Act provides for steps to control and prevent the spread of the disease, like closure of schools, liquor and wine shops and ice factories. The primary and secondary schools in the town will remain shut till June 22.

Pune The measures undertaken by the municipal council and Kolhapur district health authorities have helped in containing the spread of jaundice in Ichalkaranji, with the number the new infections coming down to 10-15 from around 150 a day.
The textile town, having a population of three lakh, had reported over 5,000 Hepatitis-E cases from May 15, of whom 12 persons succumbed to the disease. Five of the dead were pregnant women.

A 38-year-old man died of Jaundice in Shirol tehsil of the district, taking the toll to 34 in the district, authorities said today. Dileep Prakash Koli, resident of Umalwad in Shirol taluka, succumbed to the disease yesterday in a private hospital in Jaysingpur. A Sixty-year-old man died of Jaundice in the powerloom town of Ichalkaranji, pushing the toll to 36 in last three months since the outbreak of the disease, Balwant Tukaram Chaugale, a resident of Ganeshnagar area of the Town, was initially admitted to the Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital and later shifted in a Private Hospital.
