A powerful earthquake, registered at magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, has possibly killed hundreds of people in Eastern Turkey Sunday morning, with officials estimating that as many as 1,000 people may have actually been killed.

The earthquake struck at 10:41 in the morning local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and was centered in the city of Van, Turkey.

Reuters has reported, citing officials and eyewitnesses, that possibly 1,000 people were feared dead and that dozens of buildings collapsed during the quake, knocking down phone and power lines in the southeast region of the country.

News reports, video footage and images have shown rescue workers trying to free people trapped beneath the rubble in Van as well as in surrounding areas, some located near Turkey's border with Iran.

Hundreds dead as quake shakes eastern Turkey

Desperate survivors dug into the rubble with their bare hands, trying to rescue the trapped and injured

ISTANBUL ? More than 200 people were killed in the 7.2 magnitude quake that devastated parts of eastern Turkey, Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin told reporters early Monday.

Overseeing emergency operations in Ercis, one the worst hit towns, Sahin said 117 people were confirmed dead in Ercis and 100 in Van city, the provincial capital. A total of 1,090 people were known to have been injured by the quake Sunday afternoon, he said. Officials say hundreds of people remained unaccounted for and rescue teams were working through the night looking for survivors beneath the rubble.

As a cold night fell, survivors and emergency workers battled to pull hundreds of people believed to be buried under debris in Van and Ercis, where a student dormitory collapsed.

Residents in Van joined in a frantic search, using hands and shovels and working under floodlights and flashlights, hearing voices of people buried alive calling from under mounds of broken concrete in pitch darkness and freezing temperatures.

Report: Death toll rises to 217 after massive earthquake in Turkey

From Yesim Comert, CNN

October 24, 2011

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- Battling near-freezing temperatures and darkness, rescue workers and residents in eastern Turkey early Monday scoured the wreckage wrought by the country's most-powerful earthquake in more than a decade, hoping to find survivors.

They used flashlights, shovels, heavy machinery and their hands to lift the debris, and climbed over collapsed buildings in search of victims.

At least 217 people were killed in Sunday's quake, said Turkish Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin, the Anatolian news agency reported Monday. The previous official toll was 138.

Another 350 people were injured in the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey said had a magnitude of 7.2.

Turkey earthquake: Death toll rises to 432

The death toll from an earthquake in eastern Turkey has risen to 432 people, officials said, as rescue teams raced to find survivors beneath the rubble.

At least 1,352 others were injured in Sunday's disaster, officials said.

Three generations of the same family - a two-week-old baby girl, her mother and grandmother - have been found alive by rescue workers.
Meanwhile, thousands of homeless people in the cities of Van and Ercis slept in tents or outside for a second night.

Baby Azra Karaduman survived for almost 48 hours before she was found by rescue workers.

Hours later, her mother, Semiha, was pulled from the flattened building, where she had been pinned next to a sofa, the AP news agency reports.

"I am so excited. What can I say? Let God help them," the child's other grandmother, Sevim Yigit, told Reuters news agency.

The baby's father is still missing, although he was thought to be alive hours earlier.
