6.8 earthquake hits Sikkim, tremors felt in parts of North India

New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the richter scale hit North India on Sunday and the epicentre was Sikkim.

Mild tremors were felt in Delhi and other parts of North India. Tremors were felt in Patna, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal also.

Reports said that tremors were felt for almost 30 seconds.

There were no damages reported immediately.

This is the second earthquake in Delhi in the last 10 days.

Sikkim quake: ITBP buildings collapse, Pegong area badly hit

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has launched search and rescue operations in Pegong area of north Sikkim which has been "badly affected" with two ITBP buildings also collapsing after the state was rocked by a powerful earthquake.

Official sources said the search and rescue operations are getting hampered because there is no electricity in the area.

The force also lost two of its buildings. However, no casulty has been reported yet.

The sources said the officers' mess also suffered some damage.

"Two builings have collapsed though there has been no casualty. The officers mess too has been hit. The road outside the battalion headquarters has cracked. We have launched search and rescue operations," the source said.

The quake measuring 6.8 on Richter Scale with its epicentre on the Sikkim-Nepal border shook northeast and northern parts of the country, including the national capital, this evening.

At least two people were killed and 25 injured on Sunday in Sikkim after a 6.8 earthquake followed by two aftershocks shook the region.GANGTOK: At least two people were killed and 25 injured on Sunday in Sikkim after a 6.8 earthquake followed by two aftershocks shook the region, damaging houses and triggering mudslides.

According to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong, the tremor was felt at 6.10 p.m.

The first aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale was experienced within 10 minutes. The second, measuring 5.3, followed at 6.41 p.m.

The epicentre was located along the Sikkim-Nepal border, about 70 km off Sikkim's capital Gangtok.

Death toll from Sikkim earthquake at 11, rescue operations underway

NEW DELHI: A magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit Sikkim on Sunday evening has killed 11 people in India and Nepal. 5 IAF aircraft have been sent to the striken areas. Though the full extent of damage is still unknown, reports just coming in say there have been 2 deaths in Bihar, 4 deaths in Sikkim and 5 deaths in Nepal. 25 people have been injured.

The force of the quake tore down part of the British embassy wall in Nepal, but External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said the Indian embassy building and staff were safe. Power supply has been affected in Sikkim, North Bengal and North Bihar.

The maximum damage was reported from Mangan in northern Sikkim. Sikkim Chief Secretary told TV channels that mobiles have stopped functioning in several parts of the state. Power failure was also reported from several areas.

Reports said the quake and incessant rains triggered landslides in many parts leading to blocking of several roads. Two buildings of the Indo Tibetan Border Police collapsed in Pegong area.

The Indian Air Force has rushed five cargo planes to the Northeast with relief material and personnel. These include two C-130 J planes which will head to Darjeeling in West Bengal and two AN-32 aircraft which will proceed to from Agra to Kolkata. They will carry relief material and personnel of the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF). The men will proceed from Bagdogra to Gangtok by road.

An Avro-1 plane is also leaving from Delhi with relief material.

At least two died in Bihar state, south of Sikkim, while six died in the India state of West Bengal.

SINGTAM (SIKKIM)/GANGTOK: Rescuers battled heavy rains and cleared dozens of landslides while making their way to Sikkim, the ground zero of Sunday evening's 6.8 magnitude earthquake that has so far claimed 74 lives across three countries - India, Nepal and China (Tibet).

According to late-night reports, at least 58 people were killed and hundreds injured in Sikkim, Bengal and Bihar, in addition to nine deaths in Nepal and seven in Tibet. The toll is likely to rise, say rescuers. In Sikkim, the toll had reached 41. The maximum casualties have been in Rangpo, Dikchu, Singtam and Chungthang in north Sikkim. Ten persons have died in Bengal and seven in Bihar.

 The road from Gangtok to Mangan is open.

 The road from Mangan to Chungthan is yet to be opened. The damage to the road is reported to be heavy.

 Two Rescue Teams of 30 personnel each from Jat Regiment were airdropped at Mangan and Chungthan yesterday for search and rescue. The team has started work.

 A team of 10 doctors from Delhi has reached Chungthan.

 The number of deaths as reported by the State Govt. of Sikkim is 50. This may increase further as rescue and relief teams reach into the interiors ? The break-up is as follows: East Sikkim-12 (Rangpo ? 1, Singtam ? 2, Chubakola ? 5, 15th Mile ? 2, Sang ? 1, Makha ? 1); North District -33 (Mangan/Lachan ? 10, Toong ? 4, Chungthan ? 10, Salimpokyel ? 9) West District -4 (Mangalbaria -2, Geyzing -1, Kalukh-1); South District -1 (jorethang -1).

 The number of deaths in West Bengal (Darjeelling ? 8, Jalpaigudi ? 1, North West Dinajpur ? 3) and Bihar (Nawada ? 1, Nalanda ? 1, Darbhanga -1, Shivhar -1 and Samastipur -2) are reported to be 12 and 6, respectively.

 5 teams of NDRF were placed at Gangtok yesterday. One team has left for Mangan at 7.15 a.m. today. Arrangements are being made to airlift another NDRF team to Chungthan.

 Two choppers are being pressed into service with the officials of NDRF and State Govt. for aerial surveillance of affected areas and to ascertain the damage and casualties.

 Food packets have been airdropped in the Northern areas of North District this morning.

 The State Govt. have informed that they have opened relief camps in each district.

 Senior Secretaries of the State Govt. have been deputed in each district.

 One Joint Secretary from MHA has been deputed to Sikkim to coordinate the relief operations.

GANGTOK: The Army on Thursday recovered 10 bodies from tunnels in the Teesta Stage III hydel project in north Sikkim, the worst-affected district, taking the number of those killed at the project site to 27. The number of casualties in Sikkim has now swelled to 79 and the overall toll to 150.

Governor Valmiki Prasad Singh said he had received information about companies involved in hydel projects trying to suppress the number of those dead. "The companies should not try to hide casualty figures and must come out with proper list of missing and dead. Each of the dead should get compensation from the Centre and the state," Singh said, who is to visit Mangan on Friday.
