Earthquake hits Taiwan, no initial reports of damage

TAIPEI (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 shook Taiwan on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.

Taiwan uses the Richter scale to measure earthquake intensity. The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 6.5.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 8:18 am (0018 GMT), was around the southern city of Kaohsiung at a depth of 5 km, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.

One of Taiwan's worst-recorded quakes occurred in September 1999. Measuring 7.6, it killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.

Taipei, March 4 (CNA) An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Taiwan at around 8: 18 a.m. Thursday, the Seismology Center under the Central Weather Bureau reported later that day.

Except that a fire broke out in Chiayi City and a man was injured by a falling tree in Chiayi County, no other casualties or damage had been reported as of the press time.

The quake, centered 17 km southeast of Jiasian in Kaohsiung County, southern Taiwan at a depth of 5 km, was felt around the island, seismologists said.

The quake had an intensity of 6 in Nansi in Tainan County and Dapu in Chiayi County, 5 in Taoyuan in Kaohsiung County, Chiayi City and Douliou in Yunlin County (By Y.L. Kao)

A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake has rocked southern Taiwan causing buildings to sway hundreds of kilometres to the north.

Local news reports say at least one person was injured.

The quake was centred in the county of Kaohsiung, and struck at a depth of about 5km. Kaohsiung is about 400km south of the capital Taipei.

Residents in Taipei could feel buildings shake, and the quake caused power outages. The island's high-speed rail service was suspended, Taiwan's cable news stations reported.

No tsunami alert was issued.

A Kaohsiung official told the CTI news station some temporary shelter housing shelters, erected in the wake of a devastating typhoon last summer, collapsed as a result of the quake.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage.

However, a 7.6-magnitude temblor in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people. In 2006 a 6.7-magnitude quake south of Kaohsiung severed undersea cables and disrupted telephone and internet service to millions throughout Asia.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off southern Taiwan on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, said CNN report.

The quake struck at about 8:20 a.m. (local time) in a mountainous region about 25 miles northwest of Taitung, on the southeast coast, and 40 miles east of Tainan and Kaohsiung on the southwest coast, the report went on.

The tremor was followed by several aftershocks, the largest reaching a 4.8 magnitude. The initial 6.4 quake rumbled to the surface from 14 miles deep, said the report.

The shock was felt all over Taiwan, including in Taipei and Kaohsiung where tall buildings swayed for about a minute, reports said.

The Taiwan Ministry of Interior and the National Fire Agency said electricity was cut off near the epicenter located at a depth of 5 kilometers near Jiashan Township, Kaohsiung, but had no further information.

Residents in southern Taiwan reported trapped in elevators and outbreak of fire. Highspeed Railway was also temporarily disrupted south of Taichung,the centraldistrict of Taiwan, local media reported.

Nine residents in Kaohsiung are reported injured following the aftershocks and the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit is forced to halt temporarily, said local report.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on Thursday, terrifying residents, disrupting communications and triggering at least one large fire. Sixty-four people were injured, the National Fire Agency said.

No tsunami alert was issued. The quake was centered in the same mountainous region of rural Kaohsiung county that endured the brunt of the damage from Typhoon Morakot, a devastating storm that killed about 700 people last August.

Taiwanese actor Chu Chung-heng said he and other passengers were close to panic when the high-speed train on which they were traveling was dislodged from its track by the quake.

"Many people in my car were screaming," he said. "I was so scared that I couldn't make a sound. The train shook very hard, and I thought it was going to overturn."

Rail service in southern and central Taiwan was suspended, as was the state-of-the-art subway system in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan's second largest with a population of 1.5 million. Kaohsiung is about 250 miles (400 kilometers) south of Taipei.

In nearby Tainan, a fire broke out in a textile factory shortly after the quake hit, sending huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air. Power outages struck Taipei and at least one county to the south, and telephone service in many parts of Taiwan was spotty.

Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center, said the quake was not geologically related to the massive temblor that hit Chile last Saturday, but its intensity was unusual for the area.

This is the biggest quake to hit this region in more than a century," he said.

The quake's epicenter was near the town of Jiashian, especially hard hit by last year's typhoon. A Kaohsiung county official told CTI TV news that some temporary housing built for typhoon survivors collapsed.

The Ministry of Defense said troops were dispatched to Jiashian to report on the extent of the damage.

In nearby Liugui an unidentified high school student described the quake as terrifying. "Everyone was running out of the classroom, and some people fell in the rush," she told ETTV.

The fire agency said 64 people had been injured.

A spokesman for President Ma Ying-jeou said authorities had been instructed to follow the quake situation closely and take steps to mitigate damage and dislocation. Ma was widely criticized for his government's slow response to last year's typhoon.

The presidential office said he planned to visit Tainan on Thursday afternoon.

Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center, made the announcement to calm the anxiety of Jiasian residents, many of whom were rattled by magnitude 4.1 and 3.7 aftershocks that struck their hometown early Wednesday.

Since last week's temblor, more than 300 aftershocks have been recorded, with more than 10 of them measuring over 3 on the Richter scale, according to Seismology Center data.

Kuo said the aftershocks reflected the normal of release of energy and were not cause for alarm.

"Hundreds or even thousands of aftershocks can occur after a big earthquake to release energy," Kuo said.
