Ronan, what is your take on all these rapid deaths from fever in Uttar and Madhya? As far as I can tell, many of these are not pursued to diagnosis.

To put this in perspective, we have documented perhaps 3,000 disease deaths across India this year. The reality is far worse! Estimated Pneumonia & Diarrhoea deaths of children annually are around 436,000. A third of which are due to rotavirus. 90% occur outside hospital, 92% are rural.

Add in adult and older child deaths and I'm sure this number would jump close to a million. That's 2,700 P&D deaths every day. Add in Dengue, Hepatitis, TB, Chikungunya, Diphtheria, Cholera, Malaria ... and the numbers become truly staggering.

To me the tragedy is that poverty, malnutrition, squalid conditions and lack of access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare are major factors. Poor Indians continue to die by the thousand.

Attitudes like this don't help;

The recently announced introduction of scheduled Rotavirus vaccination will help, but if any one gets left out, it will likely be the isolated rural poor once again.
