Sainte Marie on alert: measles outbreak confirmed
Written by Adnews on September 9, 2025
Sainte-Marie is facing a new health threat. Since August 10, four cases of measles have been confirmed on the island, including three in children under two years old.
The information was made public by the CHRDD II vaccination service, which immediately activated an emergency response. The first cases were recorded in two separate neighborhoods, Ankôbahôba and Ambatorao, where two women developed the characteristic symptoms of measles: high fever and a rash. Tests conducted by the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar (IPM) confirmed the fears.
Nine people close to them were subsequently tested. The result: two additional cases, revealing a silent spread of the virus. According to investigations conducted by health workers, the epidemic has already spread to five fokontany of Fenoarivo Atsinanana since September 4.
Measures
In response to the situation, local authorities are taking action. Measures have been taken: limiting contact between healthy and infected people, distributing vitamin A, appropriate treatments in case of fever, and, above all, a large-scale vaccination campaign against measles (VAR). Awareness-raising campaigns among the population complete the measures.
It should be remembered that measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world: it is transmitted through the air or through direct contact with an infected person. Increased vigilance is therefore required to limit its spread on the island.
