Cases of food poisoning from processed meats have been reported in Antananarivo and Antsirabe. The Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs has taken drastic measures in supermarkets.
.
One year after the tragic anniversary, another case of food poisoning has emerged. Four people from Antsirabe were evacuated to Antananarivo for treatment at the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona University Hospital Center (CHU JRA). "They fell ill after consuming deli meats they bought at a supermarket in Antsirabe. We suspect botulism," a medical source noted yesterday.

These patients are members of the same family. They have been hospitalized in Antananarivo for a few days. "They were sent to Antananarivo because there is no suitable technical infrastructure for treating this disease in Antsirabe. (...) The condition of two patients is stable, while the other two remain under medical care," the doctor continued.

Two other people are hospitalized in another hospital in the capital. "This other case of poisoning is also linked to the consumption of deli meats purchased in Antananarivo," a medical source indicated.

This situation has put the authorities on high alert. All processed meats have been removed from supermarket shelves in several locations in Antananarivo and other regions of the country, and placed in cold storage, according to the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs. Samples were immediately taken for laboratory analysis. "The State, through the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs, has intensified its actions following cases of food poisoning linked to the consumption of processed meats in Antsirabe and here in Antananarivo," stated Haingotiana Andriamadison, Minister of Trade and Consumer Affairs.

In one of the capital's large supermarkets, the seized deli meats filled more than seven shopping carts. These goods are sealed. The results of the analyses will determine their fate. "Either they will be put back on the shelves for sale, or drastic measures will be taken, such as their destruction, if it turns out they pose a risk to consumer health," the ministry stated.

Minister Haingotiana Andriamadison urged economic operators to strictly adhere to existing trade laws, particularly those concerning consumer rights, and to ensure the quality of products offered for sale. She emphasized the critical importance of maintaining the cold chain for perishable goods to prevent spoilage or bacterial growth that could pose a risk to public health.

Health professionals, for their part, believe that it is now urgent to make antidotes against botulism toxins available in Madagascar, in the face of the resurgence of cases.
