The Fenoarivobe district is on alert. The village of Mangatany has been temporarily isolated. This decision was taken during the emergency meeting of the Joint Design Body (OMC) in this district, following the discovery of suspected cases of pneumonic plague in this village, at the beginning of November. A sibling succumbed, three days apart, after presenting symptoms of this disease, according to the Gendarmerie report. The brother, a young man named Lefara, died on November 1, the day after his emergency admission to the Basic Health Center Level II (CSB II) Miantso, a rural commune in the Ankazobe district. Invited to a family event in Mahitsy, at the end of October, he reportedly fell ill on his way home, on October 31. His sister, Eva, aged 28, died on November 4, "from the same symptoms", at the CSB II Mangatany.

At first, health professionals thought it was food poisoning, because two other women present at the same ceremony had also died in Mahitsy. It was the death of this fourth victim that alerted the health authorities. "A sample was taken from the latter. The analysis results confirmed that it was pneumonic plague," the Gendarmerie said.

Asked about these suspected cases of plague in Fenoarivobe, the directorate of health monitoring and epidemiological surveillance and response within the Ministry of Public Health stressed that it had not been informed of these cases.

In Fenoarivobe, measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease. According to the Gendarmerie report, a health team went to the commune of Mangatany to distribute preventive medication to two hundred and forty people who had been in contact with the deceased. The OMC ordered a ban on parking vehicles and motorcycles in the village of Mangatany, on the road between Mahitsy and Fenoarivobe, for twelve days. The inhabitants of this commune have been asked not to leave their village. Pneumonic plague is highly contagious and fatal without treatment.

Madagascar: siblings die, suspected of pneumonic plague

Pneumonic plague is causing concern in the Fenoarivobe district, northwest of Antananarivo province. After the death of a brother and sister with suspicious symptoms, a village has been isolated. Authorities are stepping up measures to contain the highly contagious disease.

"The test results confirmed that it was pneumonic plague."

The community of Mangatany, in the district of Fenoarivobe (Antananarivo - Madagascar ), is living in worry. According to L'Express de Madagascar , a young man died on November 1 after showing symptoms of pneumonic plague . His sister, aged 28, who showed the same symptoms, died three days later. Local authorities initially thought it was food poisoning, because two other people who had attended the same family event died in the same way. But after taking samples from one of the victims, "analyses confirmed that it was pneumonic plague".

Measures taken to prevent the spread of the disease

Local authorities then took strict measures. The village of Mangatany, where the victims lived, is now isolated. Access is restricted for several days and residents must not leave their village. Local health teams have also distributed preventive medication to 240 people who have been in contact with the sick. These precautions aim to limit the spread of this extremely contagious and potentially fatal disease in the absence of rapid treatment.
