The Macon County School District, based in Tuskegee, is closing schools at 1 p.m. today because of absenteeism from swine flu, state public health officials confirmed. The district plans to reopen on Monday. The Alabama Department of Public Health did not recommend the closure but instead is leaving those decisions up to individual school districts, said Jim McVay, director over the department's bureau of health promotion and chronic disease.
So far public health officials have seen absenteeism rates at schools, open just over a week, climb to five or six percent in certain parts of the state.
That is unusual for August but would not be unusual during winter months, McVay said. Public Health doesn't usually recommend a closure because of an influenza outbreak until absenteeism hits 10 percent or more, he said, but McVay said he didn't have access to the latest rates in Macon County schools.
Efforts to reach school officials in Macon County have not been sucessful this morning.
No other school districts in Alabama are planning closures because of illness from swine flu, or the novel H1N1 virus.

The Centers for Disease Control has recommended that schools remain open, even when there are isolated cases of swine flu. Instead, the CDC recommends sick children stay home from school until they have been free of fever and symptoms for 24 hours.:tiphat:http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2009/08/macon_county_closing_school_sy.html
