A magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck off Japan's northeast coast late Wednesday night. The Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for the prefectures of Fukushima and Miyagi. Officials are urging people in the affected areas to stay away from the coast.

The quake struck at around 11:36 p.m. and had a maximum intensity of 6-plus on Japan's seismic scale of zero to 7. The depth of the focus is estimated at 60 kilometers.

Tremors were felt across wide areas of eastern Japan. A tsunami up to one meter could hit coastal areas of Fukushima and Miyagi Prefectures.

Waves up to 30 centimeters have been reported at Ishinomaki Port, and 20 centimeters in Sendai Port in Miyagi Prefecture.

Meteorological Agency officials are calling on people in the affected areas to stay away from the coast. Municipalities along the Pacific in Miyagi Prefecture have issued evacuation orders to residents and set up shelters. ...

The magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit at 11:36 p.m. and the shaking lasted more than two minutes. It was felt as far as Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami advisories for Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures and residents were warned that waves of up to 1 meter could hit the coasts.

There were reports of power outages in more than two million homes in the Kanto region and numerous train lines had suspended operations.

Nuclear power plants were under inspection early Thursday. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said officials were still assessing the extent of the damage.

Close to 39,000 people were advised to evacuate the Miyagi area. ...

Powerful quake rocks northeastern Japan, small tsunami observed

The quake caused power outages in northeastern and eastern Japan, affecting a total of more than 2.2 million households, including about 700,000 in Tokyo, according to TEPCO Power Grid Inc. and Tohoku Electric Power Network Co. Power was later restored for most of them.

A Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train with about 100 passengers on board derailed between Fukushima Station in Fukushima and Shiroishizao Station in Miyagi, but no injuries were reported, according to East Japan Railway Co.

#NRAJapan informed the IAEA that a 7.3 magnitude #earthquake occurred ~60 km off the eastern coast of Japan at 14:36 UTC. The safety status of nuclear facilities in the area will be inspected and further updates will be provided to the IAEA, the authority added.
