Japan hit by 7.1-magnitude earthquake

Reports of people trapped inside buildings after second earthquake in as many nights in Kumamoto region

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 has struck southern Japan, barely 24 hours after a smaller quake hit the same region and killed nine people.

The quake shook the Kumamoto region at 1.25am local time, and several aftershocks soon followed. Japan?s meteorological agency issued an advisory for a tsunami of up to one metre high along the coast west of the epicentre. The warning was lifted less than an hour later.

The epicentre was about eight miles north-west of that of Thursday?s quake and shallower, at a depth of about 6 miles.

The Japanese broadcaster NHK said it had received a number of reports of people trapped inside houses and buildings. The sirens of emergency vehicles could be heard in the background as NHK reported from Mashiki, which was hardest hit by the previous quake.

Second big quake hits southern Japan in just over 24 hours

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, arriving at his office, told reporters the government was making every effort to determine the extent of the damage, carry out rescue and recovery, and to get accurate information to citizens.

The quake on Thursday evening in the same region was of 6.4 magnitude.

"Thursday's quake might have been a foreshock of this one," Shinji Toda, a professor at Tohoku University, told national broadcaster NHK.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially said the Saturday quake was 7.1 magnitude but later revised it up to 7.3.

"We are making every effort to respond to this quake," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

He confirmed there were no problems at any of the three nuclear power plants in the region.

Seismic experts believe a magnitude 7.3 quake that rocked southwestern Japan in the early hours of Saturday occurred on a separate fault zone from a massive temblor that struck barely a day earlier, and was triggered by a chain reaction involving a series of tremors.
The 1:25 a.m. earthquake, with the same intensity as the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, was about 16 times as large as a magnitude 6.5 temblor that hit Kumamoto Prefecture Thursday night, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, describing the latest jolt as the main quake and the initial one as a foreshock.
The governmental Earthquake Research Committee concluded Friday that the magnitude 6.5 quake happened on the 81-kilometer-long Hinagu fault zone running along the central part of the island of Kyushu.
Shinji Toda, professor of earthquake geology at Tohoku University, said the 64-kilometer-long Futagawa fault zone located north of the Hinagu zone could have moved to cause the fresh quake...
