Flu killed more than Covid this year in Luxembourg
RTL Infos | Updated: 21.02.2025 14:14
According to data from the Ministry of Health, during the first six weeks of 2025, when the flu epidemic was at its peak, the health inspection recorded 40 deaths linked to the flu compared to 11 deaths linked to Covid 19.
The flu epidemic, particularly virulent this season, seems to have passed its peak in Luxembourg after another week of slowdown, but remains strong.
During the week of 10 to 16 February 2025, the number of influenza cases reported by laboratories decreased from 2,049 to 1,617 cases, a decrease of 21% compared to the previous week. Infections are still very common among children and adolescents. The figures indicate that the peak of the epidemic is now behind us.
The flu epidemic has been severe since the beginning of winter , proving particularly deadly among the elderly and sending many children to hospital.
This situation is linked to several factors: three strains of the virus are circulating simultaneously (H1, H3 and B now predominant) and the vaccine has proven to be of little effectiveness, particularly in those over 65. We do not have precise figures on the effectiveness of the vaccine in Luxembourg, but in France, its effectiveness is now estimated at only 26%.
Flu will kill more people than Covid in 2025
In terms of mortality, the figures in Luxembourg clearly show that influenza killed more people than Covid in 2025. Contacted by RTL Infos , the Ministry of Health revealed that during the first six weeks of the year, the health inspection recorded 40 deaths linked to influenza, 11 deaths linked to SARS-CoV-2 and 7 deaths linked to RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).
And the trend seems similar among our neighbors. According to figures from Public Health France, during the fourth week of January, deaths due to influenza represented 7.1% of all deaths, compared to 0.9% of deaths for Covid 19.
