Health Ministry warns Flu epidemic grips Luxembourg
Update: 11.12.2025 14:14

On Thursday, the Ministry of Health published its weekly report on respiratory infections such as influenza, Covid-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

In the first week of December, the number of flu cases detected in Luxembourg’s laboratories doubled, jumping from 182 cases to 367 cases, or a 102% increase. The Ministry of Health said the majority of infections had been detected in children or adolescents. From 1 to 7 December, 99.7% of cases were influenza A and 0.3% influenza B.
These figures confirm the start of the “seasonal flu wave”, said the Ministry.

Increase in RSV infections
An increase of 59% was observed in RSV infections, jumping up from 101 cases last week to 161 in the latest report. Since October 2025, 73% of infections have affected children under the age of nine, indicating that the virus is more likely to affect the youngest members of society

Covid-19 cases on the rise
The number of SARS-CoV-2 infections has also increased from 51 to 91 cases over the first week of December, or a 78% increase.

According to the latest sequencing data, the XFG variant (54,2 %) and its sub-variant XFG.3 (29,1 %) are dominant. However, the viral concentration in Luxembourg’s wastewater has reduced

The flu is here: children and teens are stuck in bed

The seasonal flu wave has truly begun in the Grand Duchy: the number of cases has (again) doubled in a week.
During the week of December 1-7, 2025, the number of influenza cases reported by laboratories doubled, rising from 182 to 367, the Ministry of Health and Social Security indicated in a press release. This represents a 102% increase compared to the previous week, which had already more than doubled the week before (+119%). In almost all cases (99.7%), it was influenza A.

"These figures confirm the start of the seasonal flu wave," the ministry said, noting that infections are "very common among children and adolescents."

Covid cases on the rise
The Ministry reminds the public that vaccination for those under 18 is free and states that it "remains the most reliable way to prevent seasonal flu and reduce the risk of associated complications."

It should be noted that the number of Covid cases has also increased (+78%), rising from 51 to 91.
Regarding respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which primarily infects young children, the number of cases has also increased (+59%), rising from 101 to 161. Three-quarters of infections involve children under nine years old.

Respiratory infections: a retrospective of the week of December 1-7, 2025
11.12.2025

The Health Directorate publishes its weekly retrospective regarding the evolution of the main acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Influenza: Start of the Flu Epidemic

During week 49, from December 1 to 7, 2025, the number of flu cases reported by laboratories doubled, rising from 182 to 367, an increase of 102% compared to the previous week. Infections are very common among children and adolescents.

During the last week, 99.7% of the typed results were influenza A and 0.3% were influenza B.

These figures confirm the start of the seasonal flu wave. The Ministry of Health and Social Security reminds the public that it is still possible to get vaccinated and that, starting this year, vaccination is free for children and adolescents under 18.

Vaccination remains the most reliable way to prevent seasonal flu and reduce the risk of associated complications.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Increase in Cases

For RSV, a 59% increase was observed, with 161 confirmed cases, compared to 101 the previous week. Since October 2025, 73% of infections have involved children under nine years old, indicating that the virus primarily affects younger people.

COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2: Increase in Cases

During week 49, from December 1 to 7, 2025, the number of positive SARS-CoV-2 cases increased from 51 to 91, a 78% rise compared to the previous week.

The viral concentration detected in wastewater decreased.[1]

The latest available sequencing data reveals that the XFG variant (54.2%) and its sub-variant XFG.3 (29.1%) are predominant.[2]
