Luxembourg finds first case of A/H1N1 flu


BRUSSELS, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The Luxembourg government announced Tuesday that the first case of influenza A/H1N1 has been confirmed in the country.

The patient recently returned from New York. He was found with moderate flu-like symptoms on Monday and his contraction was confirmed on Tuesday.

The H1N1 flu virus has so far killed 115 people around the world and affected over 17,000 others.

Second case of influenza A (H1N1) in Luxembourg

The Health Service reports that a second case of influenza A (H1N1) was identified yesterday in Luxembourg.

This new case, as the first, has been detected in the north of the country and from someone who recently visited the USA. They went to the doctor complaining of mild flu-like symptoms (mild fever). The analysis, performed at National Health Laboratory, confirmed the presence of new variant of influenza A (H1N1).

The patient is in good state, and is under treatment with Tamiflu and isolated at home. The Health Inspectorate has carried out the epidemiological investigation and offered antiviral treatment to all the people who have been in close contact with the patient.

It must be noted that this second case had no connection with the first case occurred in Luxembourg on 1st June.

The Leaders of the heath service repeated that the basic hygiene rules still apply. As reported previously these are: To carefully and regularly washing hands with soap and water or hydro-alcoholic solutions.

It was also repeated that the health authorities in Luxembourg are in permanent contact with the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the other Member States to monitor closely the developments and take the necessary measures.

07-SEP-09 Update: Swine flu situation in Luxembourg

As predicted, the number of H1N1 flu virus cases in Luxembourg increased last week to 24 new cases since 28th August bringing the total number of cases reported in the Grand Duchy to 168.

The vast majority of patients were infected with the virus abroad and mostly from the two countries with the highest level of cases, Spain and the United Kingdom. As for transmission of the virus from person to person within Luxembourg, this figure remains extremely low.

All patients have either recovered or are recovering rapidly and no major complication has emerged so far.

Although the number of cases has risen, mostly due to people returning from holidays, the figure of 24 new cases is not as high as expected. Last week 14 new cases were reported and the week before 12.

Doctors are now stating that they should be immediately consulted in case of sudden onset of fever and temperature over 38 ? C, with cough, breathing difficulties, aches and soreness, especially when this return from abroad. Please tell your doctor in advance by telephone so that precautions can be taken to avoid contact with other patients.
