AFTER DENGU, chikungunya is spreading its tentacles in the city slowly but steadily. Till now, about 100 patients have been admitted at the Hallet Hospital with complaints of fever and 58 of them have been found to have symptoms of chikungunya, popularly known as African fever. Of these, about three-dozen patients have been reported serious.

Though, the doctors are far from unanimous as far as the disease is concerned however, most of them have been treating the patients assuming that the same as ?chikungunya?. They have started denoting this disease by writing CKG on the prescriptions. However, instead of finding out the remedies, several doctors at the government hospitals have virtually turned their back and are not ready to accept that the disease is spreading tentacles in the city.
On the other hand, several patients with symptoms as found in chikungunya are making a beeline at both the government as well as private hospitals. As several pathology reports stated negative, the doctors were left with no other option but to treat the patient on the basis of symptoms.

On the other hand, Dr Arti Lal Chandani of the Hallet Hospital confirmed that till date about 50 patients had been found suffering from chikungunya. Dr Chandani also admitted the fact that patients coming to the Hallet Hospital with symptoms of this disease also included medicos.

Dr RP Singh of the pediatric department said that there had been increase of at least 1.5 times in the patients coming to the department as compared to normal days. According to reports about 8 patients with similar symptoms as chikungunya have been admitted under Dr RP Singh.

Similarly, Dr DC Shukla, a private practitioner of Shyamnagar locality, said that in the current season viral patients had outnumbered other patients. Kaushal (26), Soumya (18), Satyam Dwivedi (14), Eisha Gupta (19) have been admitted with similar symptoms as in chikungunya.

Dr Pradeep Sehgal of the Regency Hospital said that of the patients coming to the hospital, 80 per cent had symptoms of chikungunya. Similarly, Dr RK Kakkad has claimed to be treating about a dozen patients under his supervision.

However, to avoid any confusion, doctors were of the view that chikungunya kit should be brought to the city to remove doubts among the experts.

Encephalitis: Dist hospitals asked to get act together
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/5922_1799100,0015002500000005.htm

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top align=middle width=465><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=465 align=center border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=btbig vAlign=top>DISTRICT HOSPITALS in Uttar Pradesh have been asked to make special arrangements for patients of encephalitis and other viral infections.

The directives were issued by the State?s Epidemic Cell to all chief medical officers in the districts and chief medical superintendents of the district hospitals after deaths were reported from the adjoining States.

The hospitals have been asked to remain prepared with a separate ward for such patients and arrange for platelet count.

A number of encephalitis cases are reported in September and October. Last year, the government decided to inoculate people against encephalitis and ran a campaign for it.

The CMOs of Meerut, Hathras, Gaziabad, Noida and Hapur have been given special instructions as cases were found in the adjoining districts.

Patients of viral fever are reporting to government and private hospitals daily in the State capital.

A suspected case of dengue was admitted to the King George?s Medical University also.

Another virus, which is suspected to strike this year, is Chikungunya.

It is caused by an arbovirus and transmitted by the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti. These mosquitoes are daybiters and epidemics are sustained by human-mosquito-human transmission.

These mosquitoes usually breed in clean water collections in containers, tanks, disposables, junk material in domestic and peri-domestic situations.

The Health Department, which is apprehensive of a Chikungunya strike, has asked hospital authorities to remain cautious.

But it seems it might make a comeback, though most of these 15 dengue cases are as per the clinical reports, i.e direct observation of the patients.

We have started taking all precautions. Fogging has been ensured in around 17 places of Alambagh area, including Sujanpura, Terdhipulia, Arjunnagar, JP Nagar, Chandan Nagar and Pavan Puri,? said Deputy Chief Medical Officer V.K. Jaju, who is in charge of the special dengue teams.

?We have asked all prominent hospitals to keep the CMO office updated not just on dengue, but on all communicable diseases from now,? he added. It may be noted that most cases are coming from Alambagh and surrounding areas.

When Health officials visited some of the affected areas today to get the fogging done, they found air-coolers to be the main cause of stagnant water. An appeal was made to the residents that if the coolers are not in use, they should be cleaned of the leftover water, said CMO K.K. Singh.

Meanwhile, the UP Health Directorate has issued notices to the CMO of Lucknow and Allahabad to properly update their data regarding communicable and vector-borne diseases and inform them about any outbreak.

The Lucknow Municipal Corporation has also geared itself up to fight the mosquito menace in the city. Zonal health officers have been asked to look for prone areas, and fogging machines have already been pressed into service. Two big machines are in use in Alambagh and surrounding areas, while the cycle-held small machines will also start functioning from Tuesday.

According to Nagar Swasthya Adhikari Dr B.B.S. Rathore, fogging was started two days ago and now it will be done in a more aggressive manner. He said fogging is incomplete without anti-larvae treatment, which is yet to commence.
