Bird influenza can last here

The geese on a farm in Vara municipality, Skaraborg, where antibodies against bird flu was detected last Tuesday after it rutinprovtagning, does not have the offensive variant of bird flu. It types the Swedish Board of Agriculture in a pressure message today. There is nothing in those part sample replies the Swedish Board of Agriculture have may today as interprets on that it would last the the offensive bird flu H5N1. It is a milder variant of flu, of a type one quite often sees at vilda birds and wild ducks. This variant is not contagious for people.

At a farm in southwestern Sweden, a tame goose population may be infected with bird flu. This would be the first occurrence of the epidemic in Sweden.

STORY:
A farm near Vara in south-western Sweden was sealed off today as a precautionary measure while more tests are being carried out to establish whether the geese on the farm are infected with bird flu. No animals were said to be sick.


Routine tests already taken on the geese on the farm indicated they had antibodies against bird flu in the blood, meaning that infection could not be ruled out.

[Robert Horst, Skaraborg?s Chief Veterinarian]:
"During a routine investigation anti-bodies against the bird flu virus have been found... That means that the birds on the farm have been in contact with the virus."

"We have found anti-bodies and then it's important that we continue investigating to either confirm that the virus is on the farm or that we can say that it was a false alarm."

This is the first time antibodies have been found in a tame poultry population in Sweden. Ingrid Eilertz at the Swedish Board of Agriculture told Swedish radio tests were now being carried out to establish the type of virus the geese had established antibodies against, as there are many kinds of bird flu virus.


The highly pathogenic form of the bird flu virus can affect humans. Over a thousand of hens and geese have been tested, and most results have turned out positive. When the test results are known, some time this week, the Board of Agriculture will decide what steps to take.

There was one case, and 692 susceptible birds were destroyed. There is no
commercial poultry in the area. All birds were clinically healthy at the
time of sampling, and there is no high mortality among wild birds noted in
the area either.

Description of affected population: in a holding (fenced area) which
included game birds (500 farmed mallards [_Anas platyrhynchos_]), 150
pheasants, 30 pigeons, 10 backyard hens and 2 peafowl; 50 samples were
taken from mallards and pheasants. HPAI virus subtype H5 was found in one
mallard.

Laboratory where diagnostic tests were performed: National Veterinary
Institute, Uppsala.

A week after the alarm about bird flu


It has been just over a week ago the alarm that a goose farm in Kvänum could be infected with bird flu. It turned out later not to be the aggressive form.

- Most of this takes Kvänum course, that this is nothing serious, but some rings and are worried say gåsfarmaren Klas Tornberger.

Jorbruksverket has now eased restrictions on farm and life goes on at the farmer Klas Tornberger and his geese. The 300 geese go out in the leriga hagen. Chickens house is empty, however, the birds would be slaughtered anyway, but he may not bring home new.

Agriculture Department wants him waiting until all test responses have come. He may not sell eggs because agriculture does not want people running here he explains.

If necessary, he can seek compensation from the agricultural work but Klas Tornberger who had geese and chickens all his life is not so worried about the future.

"Goosefarming has never been something for people with weak nerves ", he said.
