- The USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Minnesota Bureau of Animal Health are continuing the comprehensive epidemiological investigation of this event. Epidemiological summary of the event as of 6 July 2011:
- The event is associated with a low pathogenic avian influenza H7N9 subtype
- Due to high temperatures in the area, with a heat index value of well above 37.8? Celsius (100? Fahrenheit), the turkey flock suffered a heat related death loss of 2,500 turkeys. Samples were submitted to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and gross findings were consistent with death due to heat stress. The death loss was not related to avian influenza.
- Samples were drawn on 6 July 2011 for retesting of the flock for avian influenza. Results are pending.
- Re-sampling of any flocks within the 3 mile (5 km) surveillance zone will be accomplished during the week of 11 July 2011.
- Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease as per Chapter 10.4. on avian influenza of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2010).
