- Epidemiological comments
- The USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Minnesota Bureau of Animal Agriculture conducted a comprehensive epidemiological investigation of this event. Final epidemiological summary of the event as of 1 August 2011:
- The event was associated with a low pathogenic avian influenza LPAI H7N9 subtype.
- Due to a high temperatures in the area in July, with a heat index value of well above 100? Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius), the turkey flock suffered a heat related death loss of 2500 turkeys. Samples were submitted to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and gross findings were consistent with death due to heat stress. The death loss was not related to avian influenza.
- Retesting of the flock on 18 July 2011 and 25 July 2011 were negative for avian influenza.
- Final re-sampling of any flocks within the 5 km (3 mile) surveillance zone were all negative for avian influenza.
- The flock was depopulated on 1 August 2011 via "controlled marketing" in accordance with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture Avian Influenza Controlled Marketing plan.
- Cleaning & Disinfection (C&D) were scheduled for August 4, 2011.
- The LPAI H7N9 event is considered closed.
- Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease as per Chapter 10.4. on avian influenza of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2010).
