It's not too late to get a flu vaccine. Infectious disease expert Dr. Brobson Lutz reports he is seeing more adults come in with flu-like symptoms.
In fact, Louisiana is seeing an uptick in adult cases. State officials report the flu rate is "very high."
Lutz encourages everyone six months and older to get the vaccine now to protect you this year and even into next year.
So far two-thirds of the cases is known to match the strain that is given in the vaccine, meaning the vaccine is very protective. People who still get the flu, who had a vaccine, get much milder cases.
My comments - Louisiana has been hit hard by Influenza B and in the past few weeks they've seen an increase in AH3N2; however, there doesn't appear to be much pH1N1 yet. They could still experience a protracted period of high %ILI as H3N2 runs its course and then if pH1N1 begins to dominate.
The problem with this chart is that it shows the percent of positive specimens that were detected for each strain. The chart doesn't show how many tests were completed. In Week 3, the pH1N1 detection could represent one sample or several. The summary report does not list the number of samples collected and it does not contain the data from the chart in tabular form.
