NEW ORLEANS -- Ten-year-old miniature dachshund, Buddy, and his 2-year-old dachshund accomplice, Peety, have been quarantined for 45 days.

Their owner noticed they were playing with something in their backyard in Chalmette. That's when she noticed they had found a dead bat.

This week the state diagnostic lab confirmed that the bat was carrying rabies. Although neither Peety nor Buddy appear to have been bitten, they still have to be quarantined. Fortunately, they are up to date on their rabies vaccines.

Veterinarian Dr. Gary Levy gave them boosters and reminds dog and cat owners that annual rabies vaccines are required by state law. Most bats don't have rabies.

Humans who are bitten must get a vaccination immediately, because once severe symptoms set in, it's fatal.
