GARYVILLE, La. (WVUE) - First responders are on-site at the Marathon Petroleum refinery in Garyville working a naphtha release and fire at a storage tank, according to a company spokesperson.

Residents within a two-mile radius of the refinery are being ordered to evacuate as a precautionary measure, St. John the Baptist Parish officials say.

Marathon Petroleum personnel and local emergency responders are currently responding to a naphtha release and fire at a storage tank at the company’s Garyville, Louisiana, refinery. The release and fire are contained within the refinery’s property and there have been no injuries. As a precaution, air monitoring has been deployed in the community. No off-site impacts have been detected. All regulatory notifications have been made.

As always, our main priority is to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors within our surrounding community, first responders, and to limit environmental impact. An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the release.

St. John Parish President Jaclyn Hotard Issues Emergency Declaration and Mandatory Evacuation as Precautionary Measure for Marathon Petroleum Fire

St. John Parish has been working closely with Marathon Petroleum emergency responders as we respond together to the naphtha fire (gasoline/diesel product) at the Marathon Petroleum facility in Garyville. As a precautionary measure, St. John Parish President Jaclyn Hotard has issued an Emergency Declaration and is issuing a Mandatory Evacuation for all residents within a two-mile radius of the part closest to Marathon Petroleum Garyville Refinery.

A shelter is open at East St. John Preparatory Academy Gym, 400 Ory Drive., LaPlace, East St. John High School Gymnasium at 1 Wildcat Dr., LaPlace, and West St. John High School at 480 Hwy. 3127 in Edgard. Transportation is available if needed by calling 985-652-2222 or 985-652-6338. Residents are asked to bring medications and any other items they need to the shelter.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. — After a morning filled with thick black smoke, evacuation orders and school alerts; St. John The Baptist Parish officials have lifted the emergency orders related to a chemical fire at the Marathon Petroleum plant in Garyville.

St John The Baptist Parish officials had evacuated a two-mile radius around the plant. That order has been lifted, according to a statement from Parish President Jaclyn Hotard just after 2 p.m.

• Marathon Petroleum personnel and local emergency responders continue responding to a fire at the company’s Garyville, Louisiana, refinery.
• The fire is currently under control and has remained within the common containment-dike area of two tanks on the refinery’s property. Both tanks have sustained damage.
• As always, our main priority is to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors within our surrounding community, first responders, and to limit environmental impact.
• An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.

LA 44 (River Road) remains closed near Marathon.
