Heroin blamed for two deaths at Luling house

Heroin was blamed Wednesday (Nov. 4) for killing two men whose bodies were found in a house in Luling, and St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne used the opportunity to warn against the dangers of illegal drugs -- especially tainted narcotics.

Champage said the dead men, both in their mid 30s and "known drug abusers, had "obtained and injected heroin probably simultaneously" early Tuesday...

"This is the first time I have ever seen a double death overdose situation such as what we discovered," Champagne said. "Autopsies are pending, but I felt compelled to put this warning out ... since we are fairly confident of what happened.

"Heroin as we know is often cut with various substances to stretch the supply. There have even been documented cases of rat poison being used. How someone is so desperate for a fix as to inject poison into their veins is incomprehensible to most of us.
