West Nile may be cause of Riverbend student's death

Ouachita Parish Schools had grief counselors at two elementary schools on Monday following the death of a fourth-grader and the sudden death of a first grade teacher. Riverbend Elementary assistant principal Sharon Myles confirmed early Monday that a fourth grade student, Charly Pratt, died Sunday after being hospitalized in Shreveport.
Ouachita Parish School officials said Monday the cause of death was a protracted illness which included neurological symptoms and was believed to be West Nile Virus.
Late Monday, Myles said Pratt's mother told school officials that an autopsy would be performed to determine cause of death.

Superintendent Bob Webber said counselors were also at Shady Grove Elementary following the unexpected death of a first grade teacher late Friday. Webber said Martha Smith worked Friday at the school, but died after going home.

Bobo said Smith, who taught at Shady Grove for seven years, is believed to have suffered an aneurysm.

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - It's been an emotional week for students and teachers at Riverbend Elementary School as they cope with the lost of one vibrant fourth grader, Charly Pratt.

The cause of her death is still a mystery.
Riverbend Elementary Principle Anthony Moore says at first the parents suspected it to be West Nile.
Moore says, "but after speaking with the parent after her passing she said the tests came back negative, so as of right now we don't know what the cause of death was."

The Ouachita Parish Coroner tells us the cause of death is still under investigation.
