MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is warning Northeast Louisiana residents about a rise in avian influenza, also known as bird flu.
Bird flu is a highly contagious virus that spreads among wild birds, the CDC reports. According to the LDWF, there have been nearly 40 cases of bird flu in Northeast Louisiana since October.
Deadly infections of the virus have been reported in dogs, cats, foxes and even dolphins. Johnathan Roberts, an LDWF veterinarian, confirmed one bobcat in Union Parish was found dead and tested positive for the bird flu.
Roberts says avian flu could seriously hurt poultry farms in Northeast Louisiana because the virus kills birds extremely fast.
