17 more test positive to swine flu in UP

LUCKNOW: Swine flu in Uttar Pradesh has a strong Pune connection. More than 11 of total 17 cases who tested positive to H1N1 influenza on Thursday
in the state, had a Pune link. Official sources informed that on an average, 100 persons are being screened for the swab test daily in UP. In fact, swab samples of more than 200 persons were investigated in the past 48 hours.
Six persons who tested positive on Thursday are students of Bhartendu Natya Akademi (BNA). The students were a part of the group that had gone to Pune for a three-month workshop at the Film and Television Institute. Seeing flu-like symptoms in the students, BNA director Surya Mohan Kulsheshtra took them to chief medical officer (CMO), Lucknow, Dr AK Shukla. The CMO referred the students to Balrampur Hospital where their swab samples were collected.
Government authorities were rather alarmed over the development. Director General, health, Dr RR Bharti was evasive in his reply: "I do not count the number of cases everyday... Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences has been given this task. My job is just to ensure that every positive case gets its dose of anti-viral medicines."
When contacted, Prof TN Dhole, microbiologist at SGPGI, who's team is investigating samples of swine flu suspected cases, said: "As of now, the total number of swine flu positive cases in UP stands at 47. As many as 17 cases came to light in the last 36 hours." When asked to reason the spurt in cases, which stood at 30 on Wednesday, Dr Dhole said, "We have been able to investigate more people because of availability of essential kits."
Dr Dhole, however, emphasised there was no need to worry as over 65% of the cases were related to persons who got infected in Maharashtra and tested positive to the disease in their hometowns in UP. But, he warned that close relatives of the positive cases must protect themselves. "The weather doesn't stand by our side any longer. Rains have brought respite from the sultry weather conditions but it has created an environment that favours growth of virus and bacteria. So, prevention is the best cure," he said.
