MERSEYSIDE has had its first confirmed case of swine flu as it emerged that a Liverpool company could be at the forefront in producing a proposed vaccine.
A woman, thought to be from the Maghull area, is recovering at home after returning from a trip to Mexico last week.
The woman has been treated with anti-viral drugs and is said to be ?responding well?.
Her family have also been given medication as a precaution.
She was not admitted to hospital.
The Medimmune plant in Speke, which already produces a nasal spray treatment for seasonal flu, could be asked to start producing a vaccine for the disease.
Bosses from Medimmune?s parent company, Cheshire-based AsraZeneca, are in talks with US health authorities about the possibility of developing a vaccine.
