LIU, districts develop pandemic flu plan

It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. That's what the Centers for Disease Control, along with local school districts, are afraid of when it comes to a pandemic flu outbreak.

But, districts are working together through Lincoln Intermediate Unit No. 12 to develop a plan and have one in place in case an event, like avian flu, does break out.

But, according to LIU program specialist Terry Riley, there is a vast amount of information out there, especially on the Internet. It's good that so many resources are available, but it can be daunting, he said.

Several weeks ago, the LIU held a brainstorming session with York and Adams county school districts to hash out possibilities for readiness plan updates for districts.

The results? The LIU established a Web site with relevant information and resources for school districts.

The Web site, http://panflu.iu12.org, is available for not only the districts, but for the public to view. Featured is a one-page matrix outlining various steps of readiness, prevention and what can be done in the event of a break out. From there, various forms, documents and Web sites can be found in all of these categories.

"We hoped to try to bring it together all in one place," Riley told the LIU board Tuesday.

Riley said at the meeting, districts discussed not only developing a template for plans for districts to put in place, but what schools could do before, during and after a pandemic flu outbreak.

The first is providing awareness and education on the topic to the community.

"Rather than waiting and anticipating that it won't happen, it's important for schools to plan as if it could happen and hope that it doesn't," he said.

Plans and the Web site remain a work in progress. The best preventative measure, he said, still remains good personal hygiene. Simply washing ones hands can prevent much of the spread of a virus.

Some pandemic flu indicators are the same as any other influenza symptom, he said. Fever of 101.5 or higher, a cough, sore throat, head or muscle aches.

Only other comment for now. When there's 10% absenteeism, it will be too late. I think one of the hardest things in planning will be to find some safe target for closing schools. Schools derive their income from students in attendance. No students, no income.
