Honduras Closes to CR Chickens
Tegucigalpa, Jul 13 (Prensa Latina) As Guatemala and El Salvador, Honduras has closed its borders to importation of chickens from Costa Rica, where avian flu has been reported, the Honduran government announced Thursday.
?The administration will make efforts to avoid possible spread of the disease in Honduras, now free of any avian flu illness,? said Honduran Agriculture Vice Minister Nehemias Martinez in a press round Thursday.
Port Las Manos, bordering Nicaragua, has retained several containers of frozen chicken coming from Costa Rica for more than a week, waiting for the results of health control measures.
Martinez pointed out the official decision to not take risks for the entry of avian flu into Honduras, so borders will stay closed until Honduras is certain there are no problems in Costa Rica.
The disease reportedly killed between 34 and 280 Isa Brown hens in Guacimo, southern Costa Rica, in June, and another 336 were sacrificed as a prevention measure.
Producers appraised their losses at 400,000 dollars because of the crisis.
