Monrovia – Health authorities in Liberia are urging calm amid reports of a suspected case of the deadly Ebola Virus deriving from next-door Guinea.
An official from the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare confirmed to FrontPageAfrica early Thursday that tests are currently being conducted on a suspected case of the killer virus. That result, the source said should be ready by the end of business day Thursday.

Just days following reports of confirmed cases of the deadly Ebola virus disease having resurfaced in the neighboring Republic of Guinea, barely three hours’ drive north of the Liberian border from Ganta, Nimba County, reports in possession of the Daily Observer say an Ebola suspected carrier from that neighboring is undergoing rigorous rests at the Redemption Hospital in the Borough of New Kru Town, Monrovia.
The woman, only identified yet as Fatumata, is said to have returned from Nz?r?kor?, Guinea, where there are reported cases of the virus disease. She is believed to have entered Liberia through the border at Ganta (closest to Nz?r?kor?), before embarking for Monrovia.
Dr. Mohammed Swaray, the proprietor of the Swaray and Medicover clinics at the ELWA Junction and Soul Clinic Community respectively, told the Daily Observer that Fatumata arrived late yesterday evening (February 18, 2021) at his medical facility in the Soul Clinic for treatment but, due to the signs and symptoms she showed, she could not be treated at the facility.
Rather, she was referred to the government’s health system for proper screening. Dr. Swaray said he called the Ministry of Health and they were prompt in bringing an ambulance that conveyed the lady to Redemption Hospital.
Located in the densely populated borough of New Kru Town, Redemption is the only health facility in Monrovia that has standard containment facilities for infectious diseases. The facility was added in 2015 as a means to contain Ebola and other potential virus outbreaks. Two other facilities like it are positioned in strategic locations around the country.
“We are waiting for the outcome from Redemption, but the signs and symptoms we saw informed us that Fatumata might be Ebola positive, if not COVID-19 positive.Thank God, I was at the clinic when she arrived for the check-up. I was swift in discouraging my workers from touching her due to the severity she displayed in her ailment posture,” Dr. Swaray said.
He pointed out that out of sincerity and care for his family and the people of Liberia, he and his team have gone into self-isolation from other staff and patients who came in later for medical care.
“I am still here at the clinic in self-isolation, even though I did not treat her. There is a need to take serious precautions. My staff is also doing the same, even though they did not touch her,” he said.
Swaray added, “I am unable to give you her full name because we did not register her in our records due to the way we saw her. That is to inform you that we did not treat her at all but, with all considered, we are still making sure that we observe ourselves for a while before going back home or resuming work.”
While Dr. Swaray and his staff have decided to isolate themselves in order prevent the spread of the virus, a spokesperson at the Ministry of Health have told the Daily Observer that Fatumata tested negative for Ebola.
Joseph Wiah, Communications Director at the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), could neither deny nor confirm the case of Ebola in the country, but said there is an Incident Management Team meeting ongoing in order to engage the public with the details.
“Health authorities are having an emergency meeting as I speak to you, and at the end of the day, we will come up with a position statement,” Wiah said.

Lab result of first suspected case is still pending
Dr. Wilhemina Jallah, Minister of Health of Liberia, has disclosed that there is no confirmed case of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country following reports earlier yesterday that a woman from neighboring Guinea was suspected of the virus in a local health facility in Monrovia. Though the Minister remains the official spokesperson whose statement about health matters is indisputable, she is speaking ahead of the disclosure of the laboratory result of the suspected case.
Late Wednesday evening (February 17, 2021), news broke out that a lady visited Dr. Swaray’s clinic in Paynesville and was suspected of bearing signs and symptoms of Ebola, thereby leading to her immediate referral to the Redemption Hospital where she is still undergoing proper medical monitoring and care.
In an interview with the Daily Observer yesterday (February 18, 2021), Dr. Mohammed Swaray, proprietor of the Swaray clinics, including the Medicover clinic located at ELWA Junction, said he was afraid when a woman, only identified as Fatumata, came to his clinic bearing the severity of the signs and symptoms of the deadly Ebola.
Fatumata is said to have recently returned from Nzerekore, the Republic of Guniea, where there are reported cases of Ebola again.
“As we speak, there is no confirmed case of Ebola in Liberia,” Minister Jallah told the Liberian Senate when she appeared on Thursday afternoon to speak on what her ministry is doing to prevent the country from reverting back to the ugly days of 2014 Ebola epidemic. “Yes, what we have is a suspected case and that case is being treated.”
She said laboratory tests for both COVID-19 and Ebola are not rapid or fast in Liberia due to the many challenges including resource constraints.
“When the result is ready, this evening or late tonight, we will inform the public about the finding,” Dr. Jallah said further.

Dr. Emmanuel Ekyinabah, President of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA) said his organization is concerned about the authenticity of what is being reported ahead of test result.
“We, too, are concerned about the information. Unless they tell us that someone within the laboratory information management system has leaked it out to the public or the Minister herself has seen it, but in the absence of the verified truth that the case is negative, it is not a good thing to outrightly say that there is no Ebola case,” Dr. Ekyinabah told the Daily Observer via mobile phone.
He said it will be good news for the country upon knowing truthfully that there is no confirmeed Ebola case, most especially when COVID-19 is still around and casuing havoc. However, he said information should not be stage-managed by anyone on the basis of bringing calm.
“We are waiting to see what happens in the next hours ahead, but it would be okay for the Minister if she had said that the result is pending and upon its availability, the public could know the actual truth. Amid conflicting stories about the resurfacing of the deadly ebola virus in the country, the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health has stated that final results from the test conducted on the suspected case of the deadly disease has confirmed negative and that the Minister of Health Dr. Whilmena Jallah will address the Press today at the usual media briefing slated to be held at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) by 11 am , according to the release signed by Mr Daniel Nuxe Thomas , Assistant Minister, Information Services said.
The suspected ebola case went viral in the course of the week when it was reported that a female returned from Nzerekoure, one of the troubled spots in Guinea few days ago with high fever and running stomach and was on medication at a local clinic around the FDA Community in Paynesville for about 3 days before going to MEDICOVER Clinic where she was reported being treated and was placed under isolation. The clinic was said to have been under surveillance awaiting laboratory results from the Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town, Bushrod Island.
Liberia’s next-door Guinea, on February 14, 2021, informed the World Health Organizatio(WHO) of a cluster of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases in the sub-prefecture of Gou?ck?, Nz?r?kor? Region, Guinea between 18 January and 13 February 2021. The cases showed symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding after attending the burial of another relative (a 51 year-old nurse) on 1 February 2021. It was later on reported that the outbreak has so far claimed the death of 4 persons and 18 others were being treated and isolated in some health centers in the area.
President George Weah who has been on his maiden edition of the county wide tour mandated the Health authorities at the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) to reactivate all activities to make sure the country was prepared adequately to respond proactively in any case of eventuality. Female tested negative of Ebola
MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah says the twenty-five year old female, who travelled from Guinea recently, has come out negative of Ebola.
Minister Jallah said they conducted both Ebola and COVID-19 tests on the patient who was showing symptoms of COVID-19, after traveling from Guinea.
However, Dr. Jallah said they are still awaiting the result of the COVID-19 test.
The patient is currently in the isolated unit at the Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town.
