MONROVIA — The Ministry of Health has issued an urgent memorandum to county health officers in four southeastern counties after the death of a ship passenger showing symptoms consistent with Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF), a group of deadly diseases that includes Ebola and Lassa fever.

The memo, signed Tuesday by Health Minister Louise Kpoto, directed county health teams in Maryland, River Gee, Grand Gedeh, and Nimba to quarantine all individuals who had contact with the deceased passenger, intensify surveillance, and reactivate emergency protocols until laboratory results are confirmed.

"The patient presented with symptoms consistent with VHF before passing away during the voyage," the memorandum stated, warning that quarantine of contacts, community-based surveillance, and strict infection prevention measures were immediately required.

Health authorities said all individuals who came in contact with the deceased must undergo mandatory quarantine until test results are returned. County teams were instructed to provide daily monitoring and to report symptomatic contacts without delay...

“Ebola Is Not in Liberia,” MOH Confirms Negative Test Result for Suspected Case

Monrovia, Liberia – The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed that Liberia remains free of the Ebola virus, following widespread public concern over a suspected case involving a transported dead body from Maryland County to Nimba.

The deceased, a Turkish, who initially exhibited symptoms consistent with Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF), a category that includes both Ebola and Lassa fever, had sparked fears of a possible resurgence of the deadly disease.

In response, the Ministry of Health swiftly issued an urgent memo earlier this week, directing county health officers in Maryland, River Gee, Grand Gedeh, and Nimba to take immediate precautionary measures. The directive, signed by Health Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto on Tuesday, called for the quarantine of all individuals who had contact with the deceased Turkish national, intensified surveillance, and the reactivation of emergency health protocols while awaiting laboratory confirmation.

On Thursday, the Ministry announced that the lab results came back negative for Ebola, easing uneasiness and uncertainty mainly among communities across the southeastern region and beyond.

“We can confirm that the suspected case tested negative for Ebola. There is no Ebola virus in Liberia at this time,” the Health Ministry said in Nimba county.

NO VHF DETECTED AS SPECIMENS TESTED NEGATIVE

CHARLESVILLE, Liberia – 10th September 2025: The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) wishes to inform the public that the NPHIL regularly and routinely conducts surveillance and laboratory tests for Viral Haemorrhagic fever pathogens (VHF) which include Ebola virus and Marburg virus.

To date (10th September 2025 at 21:00 Hrs GMT), all specimens received and tested by the molecular PCR method at the National Reference Laboratory of the NPHIL have demonstrated “NEGATIVE” for Ebola and Marburg. This NEGATIVE-TEST RESULT thereby rules out any of the indicated VHF infections in said biological specimens.

In this regard, the public is hereby informed that the NPHIL cannot confirm any suspected VHF case in Liberia as of today, 10th September 2025 at 21:50 GMT. Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) are caused by many different viruses that are found in nature in animals, and the NPHIL is vigilant.

The NPHIL admonishes the general public and scientific community to remain calm and not to panic. Furthermore, NPHIL advises the public to continue observing all public health measures put in place by the NPHIL as the nation’s diseases surveillance system continues its work to keep the country safe of diseases.

Meanwhile, the Press and the general public are highly encouraged to directly contact the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) for verification of any information as the NPHIL performs its statutory duties as the nation’s response entity against public health threats — currently responding to concurrent outbreaks of Mpox, Lassa and Measles. To report suspected cases, please call the Hotline
