Summary statistics

New cases and deaths attributable to Ebola virus disease (EVD) continue to be reported by the Ministries of Health in the three West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Between 1st and 2nd July 2014, 21 new cases of EVD, including 14 deaths, were reported from the three countries, as follows: Guinea, 0 new case and 2 deaths; Liberia, 8 new cases with 10 deaths; and Sierra Leone 13 new cases and 2 deaths. These numbers include laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect cases and deaths of EVD.

As of 2nd July 2014, the cumulative number of cases attributed to EVD in the three countries stands at 779, including 481 deaths. The distribution and classification of the cases are as follows: Guinea, 412 cases (292 confirmed, 100 probable, and 20 suspected) and 305 deaths (194 confirmed, 94 probable, and 17 suspected); Liberia, 115 cases (54 confirmed, 24 probable, and 37 suspected) and 75 deaths (38 confirmed, 22 probable, and 15 suspected); and Sierra Leone, 252 cases (211 confirmed, 35 probable, and 6 suspected) and 101 deaths (67 confirmed, 29 probable, and 5 suspected). Another Ugandan Doctor Contracts Ebola in Liberia

There are reports that another Ugandan doctor in Liberia has contracted the Ebola virus.

Dr Ekwaro Obuku of Uganda Medical Association (UMA) confirmed the new development but said more details are yet to follow.

?I have heard that another doctor, Dr Jude Sekungu has been hospitalised over the same disease in Liberia,? Dr Obuku said.

The new development comes after the death of Ugandan doctor, Dr Samuel Mutoro who passed away Tuesday after being infected with the virus from a nurse at Redemption Hospital where he was working at the time. The Ministry of Health said they were aware of the development but they are yet to verify the facts of the case.

The deceased, Dr. Samuel Muhumuza Mutoro was born in Ndonga village, Kasese district and left behind two children and a wife, Diana Namukasa. He was buried in Liberia due to the nature of his death and becomes the third Ugandan doctor to die from Ebola after Dr. Matthew Lukwiya and Dr Kule Jonah. Dr Lukwiya died in 2000 during the first outbreak of the disease in Uganda at Lacor Hospital while Dr Kule died in Mulago Hospital in 2007 during the second outbreak.

Ebola: Gov't honours fallen doctor

The Government has paid tribute to Dr. Samuel Muhumuza Mutoro, the Ugandan medical specialist who succumbed to Ebola in a Liberian hospital on Tuesday.

Muhumuza, 44, a senior surgeon based in Liberia, died at the John F. Kennedy Medical Centre Monrovia, where he was being treated.

He had been working in Liberia for three years as a specialist at the Redemption Hospital in New Krul town on a contract with the Liberian government and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Diana Muhumuza, the widow, said her husband contracted the virus as he tried to attend to a patient who had been neglected by other medical personnel.

?On Friday, I called him and he told me that he was putting onto oxygen a patient who had been neglected. After some days, he told me that he developed high fever and was waiting for the test results,? she narrated.

Before his passing on, Muhumuza called his wife again and told her that he had been put indoors and the hospital had been closed for two weeks, following the outbreak.

Mrs. Muhumuza said after receiving the news of his death, they booked a ticket to go and see where he was buried, but were advised against the trip.

Rev. Jehoida Baluku Mutoro, the deceased?s elder brother, said they look forward to bringing back Mutoro?s body for burial in Uganda.

He said they have been told the body will be Ebola-free after 21 days.

ROBERTSPORT, July 6 (LINA) - The first suspected case of the deadly Ebola disease has been recorded at the St. Timothy Government Hospital in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County.

Dr. Keita said following the submission of the testing result, it will be established whether the patient is an Ebola patient or not.

He said the patient is still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Grand Cape Mount County Assistant Superintendent for Development, Tenneh Simpson Kpedebah, is calling on the Ministry of Health to provide protective materials for health workers to prevent them from contracting the Ebola virus.

Liberia: 'No Proper Treatment Given 'Ebola Suspects''

The Deputy Coordinator for the Human Rights Protection Forum of Liberia, Ms.Korpo S. Kortimaihas observed many suspected ebola patients are dying in the hospitals owing to lack of care for them a situation for which she noted many others that could be infected with EVD are not forthcoming for treatments in the medical facilities.

The deputy coordinator of the umbrella group of more 40 rights group in Liberia has called on the government to investigate the human rights violation factor associated with the fight against Ebola and bring it to a halt, saying that many people could survive the deadly Ebola virus if they were given proper attention at the hospitals.

She said she was were taken aback as a right activist that people isolated based on Ebola suspicion were deprived food, medication and company, a situation which she noted was not only traumatizing but was equally violating their rights to food, medication and association.

Ms. Kortimai told this paper that the forum have heard from nurses interviewed at various hospitals in confidence that suspected Ebola patients who are isolated in confinement for 21 days were not being treated by medical practitioners due to the refusal by medical authorities to give them Ebola treatment regalia needed to securely attend to the patients.

She said it was not possible for any one placed in confinement while suffering running stomach and vomiting at the same time to live without food, treatment and company for almost a month.

?No matter one's health situation or condition, s/he is entitled to the rights to security, the right to food; the right to medication - which are all fundamental in to life and safeguards to the existence of individual persons people,? she told The ANALYST.

She cited a second case where a medical doctor, whose name she withheld for the main time, apparently died of starvation of recent. The Human rights activist disclosed that the doctor's wife is presently kept in confinement.
Before the death of the medical doctor, Ms. Kortimai hinted that he used to call the wife on phone and complained of how he was hungry in confinement; although he was treating himself with medicine threw to his room of confinement by his colleagues.

Attempts by the doctor's wife to take food to her husband was said to have always been denied...

Liberia: Health Workers Flee Ebola

Speaking in plenary yesterday at the Capitol Building, Senate's Committee Chairman on Health, Dr. Peter Coleman disclosed that there were 12 cases of health workers infected by the Ebola Virus- ten of whom have already died; and as a result, trained and professional health workers were leaving their areas of assignment at clinics and hospitals for fear of being infected.

The Grand Kru County Senator noted that the only option to maintain these health workers is for the government to direct sufficient funds to efforts against the deadly virus which has engulfed the sub region and could be uncontrollable for months.

He said the Ministry of Health has proposed the amount of US$1.5 million to combat the epidemic or the population of the country could be in serious danger.

Maryland County Senator H. Dan Morais called on the administration to decide on a national state of emergency- an action that would enable officers of the Armed Forces of Liberia along with health workers to be posted from the Red-light via Gardnerville to the Gabriel Tucker Bridge for inspection and testing to determine carriers of the virus.

Panic is brewing among health workers including doctors and nurses in Liberia as the Ebola virus continues to spread and claim lives. At the John F. Kennedy Medical Center the country?s leading referral hospital, health workers abandoned duties in the emergency ward after a patient who was brought in very sick died.

Health authorities in Monrovia speaking to FrontPageAfrica confirmed the incident and stated that everything is being done to put the situation under control.

Despite the fight against the virus, the cases continues to rise with Bomi becoming one of the new counties to report cases, joining Montserrado, Lofa and Margibi counties as counties with persons infected by the virus.

?One case has been confirmed from Bomi. As of today in Liberia we have one hundred and thirty seven cases with confirmed cases of 54. Out of the confirmed cases, one in Bomi, 39 in Lofa, one in Margibi and 23 in Montserrado,? he said.

Epidemiology and surveillance

The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to closely monitor the evolving Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The current epidemic trend in Sierra Leone and Liberia remains serious, with high numbers of new cases and deaths being reported. Between 8 ? 12 July 2014, 79 new cases, and 65 deaths were reported from Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

In Sierra Leone, 49 new cases and 52 deaths have been reported, while in Liberia, 30 new cases and 13 deaths were reported. These include suspect, probable and laboratory confirmed cases. This trend indicates that a high level of transmission of the Ebola Virus continues to take place in the community.

The epidemic situation in Guinea is being closely observed, with 6 new cases and 3 deaths reported between 8 ? 12 July 2014. The respective Ministries of Health are working with WHO and partners to step up outbreak containment measures.

As of 12 July 2014, the cumulative number of cases attributed to EVD in the three countries stands at 964, including 603 deaths. The distribution and classification of the cases are as follows: Guinea, 406 cases (297 confirmed, 92 probable, and 17 suspected) and 304 deaths (198 confirmed, 92 probable, and 14 suspected); Liberia, 172 cases (70 confirmed, 41 probable, and 61 suspected) and 105 deaths (48 confirmed, 33 probable, and 24 suspected); and Sierra Leone, 386 cases (339 confirmed, 37 probable, and 10 suspected) and 194 deaths (151 confirmed, 38 probable, and 5 suspected).

Gov?t alarms over fake Ebola vaccine

A senior health official here has alarmed of the issuance of ?false Ebola vaccine? by imposters, acting as health workers in Monrovia and surroundings.

Deputy Health Minister for Research Planning, Ms. Yah Zolia told UNMIL radio Wednesday, July 16 that the Health Ministry is receiving reports of imposters offering Ebola vaccine in some communities.

Ms. Zolia disclosed that one of her staff and the health promotion director at the ministry had informed her about imposters delivering what they claimed is an Ebola vaccine.

Additionally, the deputy health minister said she personally received two calls from Paynesville and one from Brewerville, of complaints that unidentified individuals posing as health workers were delivering the Ebola vaccine.

She said the action by the alleged imposters is intended to create false hope within the public that there is a vaccine for Ebola, which she dismissed as unfounded....

Liberia: Does bitter kola cure Ebola?

Assistant Health Minister for Preventive Services, Tolbert Nyenswah, has disputed media reports that the nut Garcinia Kola, called bitter kola locally, is a cure for Ebola.

He said to date no vaccine or cure has been found for Ebola.

A local daily reported Tuesday that the nut had stopped the Ebola virus in test tubes in initial laboratory experiments, experts, including a Nigerian pharmacologist, revealed.

Assistant Minister Nyenswah made the bitter kola-Ebola cure clarification at the regular Thursday Ministry of Information press briefing held at the Ministry in Monrovia

Extracts from Garcinia kola seeds were tested against many complex viral diseases. The active compound, now known to be a biflavonoid, was found to be active against a wide range of viruses including the influenza virus.

In all cases, the active concentration was less than ten times the known minimum toxic concentration. Iwu says: "This gives us a very wide window of opportunity for drug development. We will be able to modify the effective compound with less likelihood of introducing unacceptable toxicity."

The research is focusing on the Ebola virus because of the dangerous nature of the disease it causes. Iwu is conducting pharmacokinetic tests in preparation for animal trials using, initially, a mouse model of Ebola infection.

John Huggins, of the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infective Diseases, who conducted the in vitro tests, emphasised the preliminary nature of the work so far. "This compound has passed the first stage with flying colours, but there is still a long way to go. It may be impossible to develop it into an effective drug."

The main barrier to the further development of this compound may be financial. Pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to invest resources in the development of drugs against extremely rare tropical diseases...

And yet has there been anything published since 1999 to that effect?

This is the only other thing I could find, using Garcinia kola extract to treat another kind of illness.

Of course, this only fuels the suspicion which is already prevalent in the region.

4 Nurses In Ebola Web At Phebe Hospital

GBARNGA, July 18 (LINA) ? Four nurses working at the Phebe Hospital in Suakoko, Bong County, have reportedly contracted the Ebola virus, while the test result of the fifth nurse is yet to be released.

According to the Liberia News Agency, all five nurses, whose names were not disclosed, have since been transferred to the John F. Kennedy Hospital in Monrovia and the ELWA Hospital in Paynesville where they are being treated and monitored by doctors.

Speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency Friday, the Medical Director of Phebe Hospital, Dr. Jefferson Sibley, said the nurses may have contracted the virus from an unidentified female from Lofa County who was admitted at the hospital for treatment on July 1, but died five days later.

Liberia: Taking Lead - Students, Youths Enter Ebola Fight

Monrovia ? In the wake of denial of the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Liberia by many Liberians, a group calling itself the Concern Students of the United Methodist University Against the Spread of Ebola in Liberia; Friday, July 11, 2014 launched a campus based campaign called "Sanitization to Safe the Nation".

The Executive Director of Education Today, Inc., James-Emmanuel D. Cole, Jr, called for an emergency national response alliance among youth and students who contribute more than 65% of the country's population to fight against the Ebola outbreak in the country and said his organization also launched it's EBOLA campaign called: "Taking the Lead to End EBOLA in Liberia" and appreciated the invitation extended him, by the Concern Students of the United Methodist University Against the Spread of Ebola in Liberia.

He underscored the importance of training; awareness and sensitization campaigns and encouraged the beneficiaries to demonstrate a high level of patriotism and commitment in the discharge of their specific duties. Encouraging students, he also warned them of doubting Thomas's reminding them, that the virus is real and is killing many Liberians.

"Some will come to you and say that it's a scam by the health ministry to steal money from government covers, all you need to do is to take preventive measure because Ebola is real and is in Liberia," James-Emmanuel D. Cole, Jr.
