Intensifying Measures Against Ebola

Posted on June 16, 2014 by demo demo in Editorial with 0 Comments

IT HAS ONCE again been reported that the deadly Ebola disease has resurfaced in Liberia. The deadly disease has claimed the lives of some individuals in Montserrado County, while others are reportedly undergoing medication.

THE RECENT VICTIM of this disease is a patient who reportedly died at the Redemption Hospital in the Borough of New Kru Town. It is reported that the nurse who was caring for the dead Ebola victim at the hospital also got infected with the disease and eventually died days after. This news is scaring especially in a jammed packed community like New Kru Town where everybody seems to be closed to another.

CURRENTLY SOME EMPLOYEES at the Hospital are expressing fear of contracting the deadly disease, which they believe may be in Montserrado County and its environs, especially following the death of their patient and colleague health worker. The situation is so alarming that Montserrado County District # 16 Representative,Edward Forh, has reported that the outbreak in recent time has claimed the lives of some citizens, including a nurse. He said the existence of the disease was confirmed by the Health Ministry, growing out of an incident in an area in the Borough, based on claim that it was spread by a lady who came from Sierra Leone.

HE STATED FURTHER that there is a search for another victim whose body was secretly taken away. Rep. Forh said a search is also on for a wheelbarrow operator who took one of the bodies to the hospital.

Liberia: Ebola Deaths Turn Redemption Hospital Into Ghost Town

By Wade C. L. Williams, 18 June 2014
...
New Kru Town, Monrovia- On a sunny Tuesday afternoon the scene at a normally busy RedemptionHospital is eerie and quiet, the patient waiting area is empty and the drop of a pin can easily be heard. The hospital seems like a church during weekdays which congregation only gathers on Sundays.
...
Mr. Dominic W. Rennie, acting head at the Redemption Hospital told FrontPageAfrica that nurses were not on strike as is being speculated, but said many have stayed away from work because of the death of their colleague from the deadly disease. Though he did not name the nurse who died, Rennie said the disease struck the hospital, when one of its stationed nurses became infected with the deadly virus.

"It was unexpected, I say unexpected because it is not that we did not have the necessary protective gears. It was unfortunate, a nurse died from Ebola, she came down with the virus, we do not know where it came from, but you know Liberia has been having cases of Ebola," said Rennie.

"The information is that somebody came here and infected the nurse but that has not been confirmed but she got sick -vomiting, and showing signs of the virus. Certain things will suggest that the person is sick, so that is how it happened and she died. It happened something like Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday she died. After it was noticed, she was isolated and she died."

Though the facility was empty with no sign of activity from either health workers or patients, Rennie told FrontPageAfrica that the hospital was still in operation, but many of its nursing staff was off work.
...
Even though the facility looked desolate, the hospital acting head tried to convince FPA that there were patients in the building but brushed off the suggestion of a guided tour of the facility, but said the hospital was doing all it could to make the community and the facility Ebola free. He said of the single death at the hospital, he is not aware of any other related case occurring at the facility.

Liberia: Unheralded Fear - Ebola Pose Risks for Liberia Health Workers

By Wade C.l. Williams, 19 June 2014

Monrovia ? The most recent World Health Organization country report on Liberia states that at least 33 persons (18 confirmed, 8 probable, and 7 suspected) and 24 deaths have been related to the deadly Ebola outbreak in Liberia. That means a lot of healthcare workers particularly nurses, are becoming extremely vulnerable to danger owing to the lack of adequate kit to protect them from suspected cases.
...
Kesseley's death appears to have confirmed the fears expressed by health workers still lamenting the lack of adequate gears, leaving them at risk and vulnerable to getting the virus.
...
But Liberia's chief medical officer and deputy health minister Dr. Bernice Dahn asserts that the problem is not the unavailability of these protective gears but the willingness of nurses and health workers across the country to use these gears.
...
Dr. Dahn said that the case, which caused the death of the nurse at Redemption hospital, was brought in as any other patient would come in to the hospital for treatment, but as it is normally practiced here in Liberia, nurses do not follow routine medical measures on prevention.

"Just by washing hands with water and soap, prevents you from a lot of diseases. I'm sure you do go to hospital; you do see us doing that. We see several before we wash our hands once, which is wrong," she said.

Continued Dr. Dahn: "Normally in medicine, there are universal precautions that you would have to take in seeing patients. For Instance, the rule is, for every patient you see and examine, once you touch, you must wash your hands with water and soap immediately after every patient. Also if you have to examine a patient and you feel you will come in contact with body fluid, you wear gloves, it's a protective gear; wear your gloves during examination."

She said sometimes health workers are a bit careless with important procedures that they need to take to protect lives including their own.
"Normally we are in emergency room, they bring in accident victim, you'll see somebody just pick up gloves go straight to the blood and stopping it with their bare hands. It happens and these are things we need to stop," she said.
...
She said the case at Redemption has created the need for health workers to begin to take Ebola seriously. She said it is very important that health workers understand the signs and preventative measures of the deadly disease to stop it from spreading further.

Ebola reads to Sierra Leone's second city

By KEMO CHAM in Freetown | Thursday, June 26 2014

The West African Ebola outbreak has hit Sierra Leone's second largest city, Bo, as the deadly hemorrhagic fever spreads its tentacles across the country.

This comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) says it is revising its way of reporting the country's fatalities after the government complained against discrepancies in the dead toll.

On Tuesday, while government announced the number of deaths as 39, WHO's figure was at 58.

The UN health agency said the cause of the discrepancy was over lumping together of actual cases with probable and suspected cases. From now on, WHO said it will only report confirmed cases in line with the government figures.

The Ebola outbreak was first reported in Guinea and has since affected Liberia, both of which neighbour Sierra Leone in its eastern region, which is the epicentre of the outbreak.

WHO says the way it reports on the other two countries will remain the same.

"They haven't asked us to change their methodology, the only country that decided to change their methodology was Sierra Leone for now,"
said spokesman Fadela Chaib.

So far 599 cases of the Ebola epidemic have been recorded in the region, with 338 fatalities.

The outbreak in Sierra Leone`s Bo city, situated in the south of the country, further complicates the problem.

The Health ministry said the case involved a patient who "ran away" from the eastern Kailahun district, Sierra Leone's most affected area.

The government plans to use a colonial-era law to prosecute family members who hide their sick.

Liberia: Getting Rid of Ebola Dead Bodies a Daunting Task for Liberia

By Wade C. L. Williams, 30 June 2014

"We need to find a special place to bury these corpses, if not, the bodies will keep piling up on us. If we don't bury them, they will begin to decompose and then that will be trouble for all of us." - A member of the burial team who spoke to FrontPageAfrica on condition of anonymity

Monrovia - On Saturday, June 27, 2014 four bodies of victims who died as a result of the deadly Ebola virus were buried but not without a hassle. Three of the bodies were near decay, as a burial team with one of the corpses was chased out of the Banjol community in lower Virginia in Montserrado County as they prepared to bury. At the ELWA Hospital Mortuary, another burial team displayed the face of a dead Ebola victim wrapped in a body bag to three members of their family.
...
"We are finding it very difficult to bury these people who die from Ebola. The community people when they see us in these white suits, they think we are some ghosts; the other day they chased some of our other friends and they had to bring the other body, they took to bury back to JFK," said a member of the burial team who spoke to FrontPageAfrica on condition of anonymity.
...
The Assistant Minister for Curative Services at the health ministry Mr. Tolbert Nyenswah said the ministry is aware of these difficulties posed to the burial teams and is doing all it can to alleviate it. "We met with the Montserrado County Superintendent and we are going to secure a place to bury people who die as a result of the disease," he said.
...
Margibi County joins Montserrado and Lofa counties becoming the newest affected county as one death is reported there. Speaking to FrontPageAfrica on Saturday Minister Nyenswah said the number of deaths and confirmed cases has increased.

"On the 25th if you can recall, the cases were 35, it increased to 38. The confirmed, probable and suspected were 61 on the 25th it has increased to 70," he said.

"The probable confirmed and suspected cases in Lofa are 49, Margibi 3, Montserrado 18. The total number of people currently in treatment unit are 33; total number of deaths on the 25th was 37 now it stands at 46; 25 in Lofa, 1 in Margibi, 20 in Montserrado. The new cases are coming from Lofa, Margibi and Montserrado."
...
At the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Liberia's biggest referral hospital, the Cholera Unit at the facility has been turned into a center for Ebola and was seen busy all day on Wednesday with patients being brought in. The ELWA and the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital are the latest recipient of Ebola cases, both reporting deaths. FrontPageAfrica has also learned that another patient succumbed to Ebola Saturday at the Catholic Hospital. Authorities at the ministry of health told FrontPageAfrica last week that the disease is a national emergency and the government is taking it with a high degree of seriousness.

"The Ebola situation is critical. We are concerned; the reason it's critical is that we are confirming lot of cases, including health workers; so we're concerned right now that we are not seeing a downward trend of this disease yet," said Nyenswah. Mr. Nyenswah disclosed that last Wednesday another health worker died and it is suspected that he might have been infected with the deadly virus.

"The proprietor of that clinic whom I understand is a physician assistant died this morning upon admission in the emergency room," he said."Healthcare facilities; hospital clinics, health centers across the country; every health worker needs to take universal precaution on dealing with the situation so that we don't get more health workers being infected."
