Liberia: 'Total Lockdown Needed to Stop COVID-19 Spread'

Infectious disease expert, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, has warned that Liberia's healthcare service will be overwhelmed if the government refuses to lock down the country now in order to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer, Dr. Nyan said in order to avoid any ugly situation like Italy, now that the country has had its first community transmission, the best solution is to totally lockdown the country and begin vigorous mass laboratory testing for the COVID-19 so as to know who is infected.

Dr. Nyan's statement comes the same day after the government through the ministry of health declared a national public health emergency as a result of its third case. The third case, a woman in her mid-sixties, attended two private clinics, one referral hospital and a beach party, leaving a trail of nearly 200 contacts, which health authorities are trying frantically to trace...

Liberia Has 45 High-Risk Cases Covid-19 Cases, Three New Suspected Cases

MONROVIA – Liberia is yet to discover the source of the third confirmed Covid-19 case but the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has announced additional three suspected cases while dealing with 390 contacts of which 45 are high-risk cases.

Dr. Mosoka Fallah, Acting Executive Director if the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) made the disclosure when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Health headed by Senator Peter Coleman for confirmation hearing.

“As of this morning, we had 390 contacts of that number 45 are high risks. What we usually do is to go after our high-risk cases; after testing, 24 of those cases are negative after first test. Once you are negative after the second test you are off the list and you are allowed to self-quarantine from home. Whether we have covered all the contacts is a tricky question to answer because it determines whether the person is saying the truth,” he said...

Liberia Confirms 3 Additional Cases of COVID-19

The government through the National Public Health Institute has reported three additional cases—bring the country total cases number to 6.

In a Facebook post, NPHIL reported that it has confirmed 3 new cases just a day after informing the public of three suspected cases.

But NPHIL did not indicate where these three new cases came from or were previously suspected cases that have been under observation and quarantine for quite some time, and their contacts have most likely been traced as well...

Monrovia – Health and other governmental authorities have reported that Liberia has now recorded its first death as a result of the global 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic.

The 72-year-old John Teah died at the Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) Hospital in Paynesville City, Monrovia.

The two Ministers didn’t provide any other details concerning the oldman. However, a source close to the family told this newspaper that what the health authorities had said against the late Teah that he died from Coronavirus are all false...

“Mr. Teah was a builder; he was taken to the hospital on Wednesday and on Thursday he developed hiccup, which he didn’t come to from until he passed,” said this lady, who asked that her name be secret.

According to her, the deceased has a medical history of being a high blood pressure patient. “His pressure went up on Wednesday and we rushed him to the hospital on Wednesday, April 2. He was never a suspect of the virus.”


She even disclosed that when news broke that their father had died from the virus, the oldman’s relatives and sons, who lived just outside the hospital fence, stormed the hospital yard telling the people that their father didn’t die from the virus. “His son even demanded that they give his father’s body so that he can go and bury him,” she added.

According to her, the hospital authority had to call in the police, who came and took the boy and others to jail.

Police Spokesman Moses Carter confirmed to FrontPageAfrica that the deceased son and others were in police custody. “We have him and others in our care. We have called on the health authorities at the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) and the Ministry of Health to come and take their samples,” Police Spokesman Carter said.

The older gentleman was amongst the latest three new confirmed cases. The other two are health workers – Doris Pratt and David Zenneh, 42, yrs old Liberian allab tech , who are a part of the first responders.

“They were lab technicians,” Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah, along with Information Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe announced Saturday, April 4 on state radio

“So, this means Liberia now has 10 confirmed cases, including one death,” Dr. Jallah added.

In the West African country of Liberia, President George Weah issued a 14-day stay-at-home order to begin on Saturday for residents of four counties, including the one encompassing the capital Monrovia, a city of more than 1 million people.

Travel between Liberia’s 15 counties will also be prohibited in most cases, Weah said.

The measures will test Liberian health officials’ promises to avoid the mistakes made during the Ebola outbreak in 2014, when the quarantine of Monrovia’s massive West Point slum sparked riots by residents lacking food and water.

MONROVIA – Liberia on April 9 recorded an additional six confirmed cases of Coronavirus, bringing the total to 37, FrontPageAfrica has learned.

According to an NPHIL and WHO situation report, one of the confirmed cases was imported while 37 were locally transmitted. Six of the indigenous cases have no epidemiological linkage to the index case. Eight hundred thirty (830) contacts including 127 health workers have been documented.

FrontPageAfrica further gathered that of the confirmed cases, six are health care workers that were treating patients infected with COVID-19. There are indications that infections prevention and control (IPC) is poor. Some health experts who asked for anonymity expressed fear that more healthcare workers would be infected as the 14 Military Hospital was not designed to treat respiratory illnesses like Coronavirus disease.

National Public Health Institute is working with Montserrado, Nimba, and Grand Kru Health Teams to identify additional contacts.

The country will lockdown with a state of emergency beginning 11:59pm on Friday as part of rigorous efforts to slow or stop the transmission.

The Director of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has disclosed that over 71 cases of the COVID-19 cases has been confirmed, noting that the previous number of 59 has been increased with four recovery, five death.

Dr. Mosoka Fallah speaking on a local radio station, the Truth FM on Thursday, April 16, 2020 in Monrovia said he support one hundred percent lockdown which he said would greatly help in the containment of the virus in Liberia, and further said although a total lockdown will be very expensive, but was quick to have said that it would be better than allowing the illness to overtake the country...

The report notes that one thousand two hundred eighty-six (1286) contacts including 223 health workers have been documented. A total of 837(65%) contacts have completed 14 days since exposure

Monrovia – Five new confirmed cases reported from Montserrado County took Liberia’s cumulative COVID-19 cases to 81 Saturday as healthcare workers continue to take a toll from the killer virus.

According to the latest situation report from the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), there is also twelve new suspected cases with the death toll increasing to seven.

Not much detail is being released on the seventh death which according to the report took place outside the Treatment Unit.

The new suspected cases also give rise to the number of health workers with 18 new cases documented as of Saturday...
