Remember the swine-flu pandemic of 2009?
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there were as many as 89 million people who caught the H1N1 virus in this country. More than 18,000 died from H1N1-related illnesses across the nation, including some in Central New York. A greater proportion of children and young adults, as well as pregnant women, got sick compared to typical influenza seasons.
Though federal, state and county governments had done elaborate planning for an avian flu pandemic that never materialized in the United States, health officials wound up making mistakes and wrong assumptions that may have cost lives. The lessons they learned should be part of plans for the next health emergency.
