Lesotho to implement 3-week lockdown from Sunday

Lesotho prime minister Thomas Thabane has announced the country will be on lockdown for three weeks.

Lesotho will implement its own lockdown from Sunday midnight until April 21 to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The mountain kingdom is entirely surrounded by SA and the economies of the two countries are intertwined.

The two countries’ governments are in close consultation for a coordinated response to Covid-19.

Lesotho prime minister Thomas Thabane said the country’s two million people will remain in their homes for the next three weeks.

Only those in essential services like health, security, utilities, banking and supermarkets will be working...

JOHANNESBURG - Lesotho healthcare professionals said that they were downing tools from Monday and they would only attend to emergencies excluding suspected COVID-19 cases.

Doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians among others are protesting following failed attempts to engage government on how to obtain protective gear.

They had given the ministry of health until Friday to respond to their grievances but there's still no reply.

Lesotho has no confirmed COVID-19 cases but with no testing capability, the country has sent 10 suspected cases to the NICD, that came out negative.

Government has declared a state of emergency and a lockdown and a national command centre has been set up...

Lesotho’s Prime Minister Thomas Thabane announced Tuesday that his government will begin easing restrictions imposed last month to curb the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the mountainous kingdom.

Addressing the nation on state television, Thabane said the government will now allow non-essential businesses to start operating from Wednesday for limited hours so as to protect the economy.

Thabane said tertiary institutions and high schools will be allowed to start opening gradually while public offices and state companies will open for limited hours.

However, borders remain closed as the country continues to monitor the situation.

The prime minister also cautioned citizens to remain vigilant by wearing masks and following guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.

Lesotho has recorded its first case of COVID-19, the health ministry says, becoming the last country in Africa to be afflicted by the virus.

The ministry said it had conducted 81 tests for COVID-19 from travellers from South Africa and Saudi Arabia, of which one was positive. It was waiting for results from 301 other tests.

The remote, high-altitude kingdom, nestled in a South African mountain range, had previously been spared the coronavirus, although its bigger, more industrialised neighbour has recorded more than 10,000 cases...

MASERU - Lesotho’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 has caused panic as conflicting information about the patient’s whereabouts and travel history remained unclarified by government.

On Wednesday night, Health Minister Nkaku Kabi said that the person was one of 30 students who had arrived from Saudi Arabia and the patient was in good health.

But, World Health Organisation (WHO) Lesotho director Dr Richard Banda and the students said that there were only five of them from Saudi Arabia and none of them were positive.

Kabi said that Lesotho tested a group of 81 people - 51 from South Africa and 30 from Saudi Arabia - and one them tested positive for the coronavirus.

Since then, Basotho have been asking how the people travelled from Saudi Arabia if the patient was in isolation and whether contacts had been traced but no answers were provided...
