Juru illegal immigrants hospitased for food poisoning (Update)

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Food or water contamination is the likely cause of the 37 foreigners falling sick at the Juru detention camp near here last week.

State Immigration Department director Abdul Rahman Harun this was conclusion reached by the health authorities after examining the blood samples of the victims.

?It could well be a leptospirosis outbreak but the authorities haven?t be able to pinpont the source of the contamination yet,? he told a press conference after visting the camp Sunday.

Leptospirosis outbreaks are usually caused by exposure to water contaminated with the urine of infected animals, such as rodents, cattle, pigs, horses, dogs and wild animals.

People become infected through consumption or contact with urine-contaminated water, food or soil.

Abdul Rahman said the authorities have to determine what the foreigners ate in the camp or what they ate before they were brought to the camp.

?It is a fact that some foreigners eat all sorts of food. Some even eat rats, dogs, cats and even cockroaches,? he said.

He said the death of 21-year-old detainee from Myanmar at the Bukit Mertajam hospital on May 12 was due to a combination of heart and kidney problems.

?It has got nothing to do with food or water contamination,? he said.

Abdul Rahman said of the 37 foreigners admitted to the hospital, only 23 were still warded.

He said 22 were admitted to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital and one at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

Abdul Rahman said a team of health personnel had been deployed at the camp and they had taken blood samples from all detainees.

He said the camp would no longer accommodate new detainees and had prohibited the entry of outside visitors.

?We have also distributed antibiotics to all personnel at the camp for precautinary measures,? he said.

There are 552 illegal immigrants in the camp comprising 478 males, 72 females and two male children.

Meanwhile, state Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh maintained that there was a leptospirosis outbreak at the camp.

?It cannot be mere food contamination,? he said.

He said the first case was detected on May 7 and a detainee died five days later following bacterial infection.

?If there was food contamination, all the detainees would have been affected,? he said.

Phee said he believed the worst was over in the camp.

?We have taken steps to contain the outbreak and we have disinfected the camp.? he said.
