Lectures cut after outbreak of measles
Three universities in Tokyo closed their doors after an outbreak of measles among students.
Sophia and Soka universities, in Chiyoda Ward and Hachioji city in Tokyo's west, respectively, have canceled classes.
Meisei University in the city of Hino, meanwhile, temporarily stopped 75 students from attending classes due to an outbreak of the infectious disease.
Sophia University said classes would be closed until May 19 after 10 students were confirmed to have developed the illness by Friday.
The first student was diagnosed with the disease on May 2. Although one student was hospitalized, none was seriously ill, officials said.
Meisei University said Friday that it had instructed 75 students from the humanities department to stay home until May 20, fearing they may have contracted the illness.
Four people, including students from the department, were reported to have developed symptoms earlier this month.
Soka University suspended all undergraduate, graduate and other peripheral classes for about two weeks in April due to an outbreak.
According to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, this year's outbreak of measles is particularly widespread among people aged 10 to 29.
According to the institute, the outbreak may stem from the fact that a number of people in that age group had little opportunity to contract the virus after being inoculated in their childhood.
After running rampant mainly in the Kanto region, the outbreak is now expanding into other areas.(IHT/Asahi: May 14,2007)
