Seasonal flu: a more severe variant is circulating this year in Lebanon

The Ministry of Health reminds everyone of some health guidelines to follow to protect more vulnerable populations.

OLJ / December 27, 2025 at 12:09 PM

The Ministry of Health has published its guidelines regarding the current influenza strain in Lebanon, A(H3N2), based on available scientific data. The ministry states that "this strain is not new; it has been known for a long time, but this year it has undergone a mutation that makes its symptoms more severe and its spread more rapid than in previous seasons." "It is well known that influenza viruses are subject to mutations and can be more or less severe depending on the season," the statement reports.

The ministry reiterates the importance of protecting the most vulnerable, particularly those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, children, and pregnant women. "The flu vaccine is one of the most effective ways to prevent the most severe symptoms of the illness," the statement reads. The ministry specifies that "vaccines covering current variants are available and help reduce the risk of hospitalization and severe cases."

He calls on citizens to follow these guidelines:

Follow hygiene rules, especially wash your hands regularly.
Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, and use disposable tissues.
Wear a mask in enclosed spaces, especially as soon as the first symptoms appear.
Avoid crowds and gatherings if you feel unwell, and consult a doctor if the symptoms seem unusual.
Get vaccinated, especially if you belong to one of the vulnerable categories.

Press release about seasonal influenza

In the context of ongoing monitoring of the seasonal influenza situation, the Ministry of Public Health/Department of Preventive Medicine announces that Lebanon, like many other countries, is currently experiencing a seasonal influenza wave characterized by relative severity and rapid spread among the population. Scientific data indicates that the dominant strain is influenza A(H3N2).

The ministry confirms that this strain has been scientifically known for many years, and it is not a new or emerging virus as is rumored, but it is undergoing a mutation this season that makes it more capable of causing more severe infections and spreading faster compared to some previous seasons.

It is scientifically known that the influenza virus undergoes continuous annual mutations, which in some years may lead to more severe symptoms or higher rates of spread.

The Ministry of Public Health explains that influenza is a rapidly spreading viral respiratory disease that may lead to health complications in some groups, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases or weakened immunity, which calls for raising the level of health awareness and adhering to the necessary preventive measures.

The ministry also affirms that annual influenza vaccination is one of the most effective means of reducing the risks and complications of the disease, especially among the most vulnerable groups, stressing that the vaccines currently available cover the prevalent strains and contribute to reducing hospitalization rates and severe cases.

In this context, the Ministry of Public Health calls on citizens to adhere to the following guidelines:
• Adherence to personal hygiene rules, especially washing hands regularly with soap and water or using alcohol-based sanitizers.
• Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and use tissues and dispose of them in a hygienic manner.
• Wear a face mask in enclosed or crowded places, especially when respiratory symptoms appear.
• Avoid mixing with others and gatherings when feeling unwell, and consult a doctor immediately if severe or unusual symptoms appear.
• Receiving the annual flu vaccine, especially by those most at risk of complications.

The Ministry of Public Health also affirms its continued close monitoring of the epidemiological situation and its commitment to taking necessary measures in coordination with relevant authorities, urging citizens to obtain information only from official sources in order to protect public health and community safety.
